      @eje211 https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Add-a-New-System-in-EmulationStation/#step-31-launch-roms-with-the-runcommand-script

You need to edit the launch command in your emulators.cfg at /opt/retropie/configs/gc/emulators.cfg and/or /opt/retropie/configs/wii/emulators.cfg. Replace the command (or add a new one) to use your installed binary instead of /opt/retropie/emulators/dolphin/bin/dolphin-emu

@Grumbles I've found that any images over 1000 pixels either vertical or horizontal either won't load, or are slow to load. The sweet spot for HD resolution and speed seems to be in 750-850 range. Don't use 300 dpi, drop it to 144 or 72 dpi as well.

I've done this to all of my images and I'm happy with the look and load speed on a 55" screen.

One last one .. make sure the size of the file is not over 900k. Reduce it to around 600-500k as long as it doesn't screw-up the quality.

I'm running a Pi3b+, a highly modified version of Eudora with custom system pics and logos if you need to know

@Dochartaigh said in Video Snap volume TWICE AS LOUD as in-game play:

      That's at 96%

That's pretty high, even without omxplayer. My guess is you've modified the RetroArch settings for the sound and you're not using the system audio volume, but some config that got saved.

96% is the default a new build has come with for years if I'm not mistaken (if we're talking about the same menu, in ES, when you hit 'start' > Sound).

Also impossible for me to change the sound volume as I wouldn't even know where to start looking to do such a thing (which is also why I posted here about audio since I know near to nothing about it ;)

@Folly said in Moving art/video-snaps/gamelists/and-other-settings to USB Drive ALONG with ROMs?:

you also have to copy the media and change the locations in the gamelist.xml otherwise your media isn't found.
You can simply do that with find and replace in a text editor.

Thank you for that information, but TBH the entire point of me making this post is basically to NOT have to manually edit .XML files (and like 30+ of them for all the systems I run). Just trying to see how in RetroPie you can turn on the feature to have the gamelist.xml's and the media folder w/ artwork switched over to the individual rom folders. Skyscraper seems to do this, but that process can take days or WEEKS even (when it's acting up and timing out 99.99% of the time) – so it is possible, just don't know how...

@cdaters said in Moving art/video-snaps/gamelists/and-other-settings to USB Drive ALONG with ROMs?:

What you are proposing is very cool, you are looking for a portable RetroPie set-up much in the same vein as a Portable Apps USB flashdrive. I don't know if this is realistic in the sense that your emulators on each Pi that you run that USB drive on would have to be configured the same way. This includes your controller configs, etc.

Right now I'll be happy if I can get my first step figured out: how to get my games + scraped art onto the USB drive, and have a fresh system read from the USB for those two things (nobody yet has been able to tell me a good way to point RetroPie to the USB drive for those things...).

My premise to do this is simple: scraping is STILL a nightmare, ~SIX years later (since my 1st build). Granted these last two spats have been the best ever, but with a six year history of it timing out forever (even with extra threads on Screenscraper.fr), and taking me literally, no joke, days to even WEEKS to scrape my 30+ systems properly, I have very high doubts it'll continue to be good.

So, when I can get an entire Pi setup, ALL my customizations, all roms working, everything – in a couple hours, minus artwork... but then it can STILL take anywhere from like 6-12ish hours (best case scenario), to DAYS to WEEKS to scrape the art for 30+ systems. This is why I want a USB drive with all games, then in each individual rom directory have the gamelist.xml + 'media' folder with all the art/videos so I never, ever, have to deal with a scraping nightmare ever again.

...I'll deal with the settings later (which BTW, the gamelists have NOTHING to do with any of my other tweaks - they literally just say the game name + where to find the art/videos-snaps... so they work on ANY emulator on ANY model of Pi!).

Please add some info about your system, as detailed in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first.

What format are your videos and how did you get them (scraper/download/other) ? EmulationStation doesn't automatically detect videos/images if copy them next to your ROMs, the videos need to be associated to the ROMs/games in the system's gamelist file. Usually a scraper does that automatically, but if you copied them manually and expect to show up in EmulationStation, that won't work.

How do you enable Use Local Art? I have my videos named "romname.mp4" so I will rename them to "romname-video.mp4"

Open the Emulationstation menu with Start and try looking through the available options - I think it's in the UI sub-menu (?).

Also, so that is what that little pop up box is for, not sure how I missed that in the Docs. What does this part mean: "(the bottom face button is recommended as to not accidentally change anything) " ?

Use the A or B buttons.

@cwalk828 Usually this is up to the theme, the scraper just downloads the files (images/videos) and adds them to the gamelist.xml used by Emulationstation. But I don't think this is supported by Emulationstation (playing video in the bg) - if you're interested in this kind of display I think Pegasus (another front-end) might support this.

What is the source of the video snaps ? Did you use a scraper to download them or added them yourself ?
      Run from a command line

      ffmpeg -i <path_to_video_file_with_errors>

and paste here the output to see what codec/video format is the video file.

Thanks a lot mitu, it sounds pretty interesting, I will investigate it.

By the way, paradadf, I have just try skraper and It detects a lot more roms! It's incredible (and very easy to use, using the windows program). Maybe I will have to manually scrapping only few roms. Thanks a lot!

@rocco42 we don't really offer support here for other images as we don't possibly know versions or conflicting software that may be installed there.

That being said you will want to turn off OMX Player for that to happen, if that version supports it. Other issues will likely occur.

@pjft I did it just now and I can confirm the problem is solved, OMX is working fine, same behaviour as VLC.
There's still a volume difference between each single videosnap, of course because every video has its own volume.
I don't know if it's possible but it could be great to have an general normalise audio function used to keep the volume level more or less constant between each video.

@detron thanks! You can change when the caption shows - during the entire clip or just beginning and end - in the video screensaver options menu.

You can also launch it directly by pressing start while the clip is showing ;)

Sometimes you can find samples of theme songs from video games on Wikipedia. They're almost always are in Ogg format.

Here's an example of Supre Mario Bros. Theme:
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mario_Bros._theme
At the top right click on Menu from the Player options and then click the down arrow then right click on the file to Save As.
