      @johnny5126 I am new to Vice having only installed it over the weekend.

      The video tutorial above that I used to map my joystick encouraged me to Save current settings, Save hotkeys and Save joystick map each time I made a new mapping.

      I followed this advice and when I looked at the Vice config files in /opt/retropie/configs/c64, I noticed that changes were only being made to sdl-joymap-C64.vjm and not sdl-hotkey-C64.vkm which was the same as when first created.

      For your maps to the virtual keyboard, for example, you should choose Save joystick map for them to persist. You can check this by looking at sdl-joymap-C64.vjm and you should see a line like 0 1 0 5 Virtual keyboard.

      if you use the standalone vice emulator, you can configure it to use a turbo cartridge by default, which can significantly speed up loading from disks etc, without having to use warp mode in the emulator (which is limited due to CPU speed on RPI).

      Now vice won't save the mapped hot keys. I load up the virtual keyboard, select a key, press M then press a button to map. In game it works fine. I press f12, then settings management, and save hot keys, and then I exit and reenter, and the key is no longer saved. Any ideas?

      I guess I’m the only newbie here.

      I use VICE from time to time, but with this I'm just as new as yourself. That said, I don't think you have to type anything in. I believe it's all done through the options menu.

      @RetroFreak - This may help .

      • Go to "Machine Settings" and then "Joystick Settings".
      • Then go to "Map Joystick", this screen will show you the mappings for two joysticks. Navigate to the "up" mapping, select it and then press "up" on the joystick. Repeat this step for all the other mappings, and for both joysticks if you have a two players connected.
      • Now go to "Joystick Settings" and "Joystick Device 1" and set this as "Jyostick", you can also set "Joystick Device 2" as "Joystick" if you have two players.
      • Next go to "Machine Settings" and "Joyport Settings". Choose "Control Port 1" and select "Joystick, do the same for "Control Port 2".
      • Now exit the gui and the joystick should now work.
      • However, C64 games are sometimes played from Joystick port 1 or 2, this may mean the joystick will not work. The way to remedy this is to re-enter the gui, navigate to "Machine Settings" and then "Joystick Settings". There will be an option to "Swap Joystick Ports" press enter and then exit out of the gui. The joystick should now work. You can also map the "Swap Joystick Ports" to a hotkey (see below).
      • Now these keys have been set they need to saved so that VICE will use these mappings next time it is started. To do enter the gui and choose "Settings Management", then choose "Save Current Settings" and "Save Joystick Map" then exit out of the gui.

      I solved this as detailed here: (you have to save a keymap and set the active keymap to "positional (user)")...

      @edmaul69 Hello! Well I've got Boulderdash running with vice (not lr). But Im going to re-install Lr-vice again. But heres what works for me. in case anyone has the same difficulty.

      [All from the ViceMenu GUI]

      1- Restore defaults from 'settings management' (this is a different pref set than the package, you can tell as it changes the display filter to emu crt display)
      2 - Set Machine settings / Joystick settings / Joystick device 1 -> Joystick
      3 - Set Machine settings / Joystick settings / Joystick 1 mapping -> !Go set this!
      4 - Save your settings in 'settings managment'

      I think my naviety was !assuming! that because I've configured controllers for retropie that the mapping would naturally carry over to the emulator. Not for vice it seems. Lesson learned.

      On the keyboard front, I loaded up the mac version of Vice, found the symbolic and positional keyboards for mac. I then loaded those into the C64 rom section. Then loaded those keyboard layouts in vice. However this made no difference. Unless you have to save the keyboards .kvm's in a specific location I think keyboard mapping is broken in vice

      What worked was the virtual keyboard. And knowing that you have to press f1 to start the game. Yep pressing fire button wont do jack (it's 1984) https://ia600707.us.archive.org/20/items/Boulder_Dash_1984_First_Star_Software/Boulder_Dash_1984_First_Star_Software.pdf

      Thanks Edmaul for the tips to keep lookin.

      @mattoo_pie turn warp off. Only use it to actually get to when a game actually starts playing.

      @buzz Updated setup script and vice from binary; xvic now launched correctly with specific parameters. Also edited emulators.cfg for expanded as suggested.

      Runcommand.log is here.
      It shows some errors, probably just minor as cartridges seem to work perfectly.

      Thanks for the fix ! Really appreciated.

      @yellowball have you used warp to speed the loading process to verify you just arent waiting long enough. I personally use lr-vice. Some people are really picky how they want their stuff setup and wont use lr-vice. I have never had an issue. All the games i have tried work. And warp is automatic in it.
