      @cmftblynu Thanks for replying. I tried everything but that. It makes sense as the resources to run vice are pretty high on a Pi.

      At any rate, I figured out how to disk swap in lr-vice, so I'm sticking with that. After all is said and done, that was the goal. I only used Vice because it ran so well for so long and I knew my way around it really well.

      Now that lr-vice64 is up to speed and supported well, I'm going to stick with it.

      I even went to far as to tweak the background image by TreyM to look more like my room and desk did back in 1984. Lol.

      Thanks again,

      @buzz Sorry my bad :-( Guess I'm already late for the train since stretch is being removed.
      I can survive the rest of the "stretch days" with the vice X64 emulator.. Anyways thanks for all the great work you've done with RetroPie. It is much appreciated :-)

      We don't support 3rd party images - especially the ones loaded with ROMs. Use the image from retropie.org.uk/download and we can offer support.

      I think the case looks pretty neat, but the $80 is way too much for me to ever even think about purchasing one. I actually own one of those joysticks with the built-in fpga C64 in it that I bought for $3 at a thrift store, and while not quite as functional as the C64 mini without modification, it's served me well enough, and I plan on modding it when I get a change.

      I don't know how to help but I would recommend that you try lr-vice. It's considered experimental but it works fine for me and benefits from RetroArch's control and shader goodness.

      @whistlernl when i wired up my ipac in my apple iie pi i specifically programmed button a as enter and button b as space and start as esc. This made it pretty well setup for vice as those are the 3 most used keys in vice. Not sure why some games on c64 require hitting escape to get past some title screen/instructions screen while also using space or enter in that same game?

      @edmaul69 Hello! Well I've got Boulderdash running with vice (not lr). But Im going to re-install Lr-vice again. But heres what works for me. in case anyone has the same difficulty.

      [All from the ViceMenu GUI]

      1- Restore defaults from 'settings management' (this is a different pref set than the package, you can tell as it changes the display filter to emu crt display)
      2 - Set Machine settings / Joystick settings / Joystick device 1 -> Joystick
      3 - Set Machine settings / Joystick settings / Joystick 1 mapping -> !Go set this!
      4 - Save your settings in 'settings managment'

      I think my naviety was !assuming! that because I've configured controllers for retropie that the mapping would naturally carry over to the emulator. Not for vice it seems. Lesson learned.

      On the keyboard front, I loaded up the mac version of Vice, found the symbolic and positional keyboards for mac. I then loaded those into the C64 rom section. Then loaded those keyboard layouts in vice. However this made no difference. Unless you have to save the keyboards .kvm's in a specific location I think keyboard mapping is broken in vice

      What worked was the virtual keyboard. And knowing that you have to press f1 to start the game. Yep pressing fire button wont do jack (it's 1984) https://ia600707.us.archive.org/20/items/Boulder_Dash_1984_First_Star_Software/Boulder_Dash_1984_First_Star_Software.pdf

      Thanks Edmaul for the tips to keep lookin.

      Vice isn't a Retroarch emulator, it treats a keyboard as a real commodore keyboard. If you press f12, do you get the config menu? In there you can setup controls.

      Also some c64 games seem to want joystick 2 instead of joystick 1 for control.

      @dunnieboy i dont have my pi to tell everything exact. After you set your controllers up back at the main menu i believe you go into the bottom option. If you go in there you can set save on exit and you can save your joystick config in there too. I think its in there where the option to set the menu button to the controller too.

      @mediamogul said in C64 VICE Is it possible to use two joysticks?:

      @gold64

      Select 'Joystick' for both. This doesn't actually select a specific connected joystick, but rather tells the emulator to use joystick mappings. The joystick mappings can be configured to your connected joysticks near the bottom of the same menu.

      Ah, I understand it now, thanks @mediamogul . So that option tells VICE what type of controller to use in each port, vs. actually selecting a specific controller to use. I was now able to get both DS4's working, and play a game with two players, after mapping each controller using the other setting. I then saved the config files and copied them to my PC in case I mess it up again.

      Yes, I wonder if VICE isn't currently broken in some way with regards to how it saves (or possibly loads) its configuration files, but I wasn't able to reliably reproduce the problems I was having when I first setup a single DS4. Just kept trying until I got it to work.

      Thanks for the quick replies everyone.

      Um, this issue is solved I guess, not sure how I mark this topic as solved (sorry, it's my first thread)? Thanks.

      @bios said in c64 roms not playing well in Vice:

      I want to have the screen in the right aspect ratio but without black bars above and under the screen.

      I believe this is just a limitation of how the emulator works in regard to changing resolutions on-the-fly.
