If I were to try lightgun solutions on the Pi, I'd use a Wiimote + gunmod + this:

Then again... We might try House of the Dead 1 and 2, Daytona, Virtua On and many others via the emulation of their (lower quality) PC ports.

@vbs they were the same before. We flattened the RPI structure so shader previous/next hotkeys worked as they don't work with subfolders

There are some open-source linux pinball games that might be able to be ported.

There are some others. Also, these need some graphical love. I might be able to help.

All of the Pinball Dreams, Pinball Fantasies, Epic Pinball and Extreme Pinball run fantastic on a Raspberry Pi 2. Gameboy advance has several great pinball games, as does Playstation and even Nintendo if you know where to look.

Don't forget that PSP runs quite well on Pi2 overclocked and Pi3 standard.

I tried them both now, and nestopia definitely has the better audio emulation. Mario 1 dying sounds so inaccurate in fceumm. In the past, nestopia had this strange sound bug every now and then but I no longer hear it. Though, maybe the fceumm audio accuracy might be improved in the future?

And can I recommend having the Unsaturated or Nes-Classic Palette as default? They look much better on both emulators.

In my case it Lubuntu 16.04 x64. I have 4 Xbox 360 Wireless Controllers that work fine with the Microsoft USB dongle.

@vbs It's not a bad idea (I have thought a lot about it - especially when I was doing the reorganisation of the retropie-setup menus), I just think it's really only retroarch which would benefit (maybe a couple of others) - so it's whether the work is worth it. I'm pretty certain it will be me who has to maintain this long term too. I'll see how retroarch develops though and reconsider it in the future if it seems required.

I feel sad and happy at the same time. You solved the problem, that's it! I did it all as 'root'.

I suck with linux, I'm never going to learn this, i don't even know which user i should use to make a lousy update.

Shall i assume that i must use the pi user, for all the operations?

After exiting retropie_packages.sh setup, do i have/must setup any extra permissions on the command prompt?

As far as i can tell, i already followed the advice. i did a search and this was the closest thing that came up about my question. i've put many, many hours and late nights, in the past week researching this project and just trying to figure this out. Thanks for any help and direction.

@Arcuza I think it's possible, but needs some hacking in a few files (e.g. es_systems.cfg, retroarch.cfg, gamelist.xml) and I think the game list in emulationstation would be a mess.
