So, I've finally managed to find some time to assemble my RP in the OneNineDesign case.

This was V2, the first one was a bit trial and error, so I bought another case (under a fiver delivered!) and set about working on it today. I did purchase a 3mm white LED as the 5mm almost lit the room up-the 3mm is still bright but not as bad. I also purchased a set of diamond hobby files from Maplin for about £6 so I could file the edges of the holes I drilled. I also made sure to cover the unit in masking tape as it marks so easily, but also good for getting measurements right.

    So, this is the case:

    Cut out for power:

Switch and LED (lined them up with the audio output and HDMI to make it look a little more in line with factory cut outs):

Here you can see the header pins bent down to allow the original lid of the case to go back on:

And here are the parts I had to file off in order to let the lid sit back on as it should:

All in all, I'm really pleased with the outcome. I was nervous about bending the pins on the ControlBlock, but I was so careful and it worked out fine: to look at it doesn't look any different from how it did originally. The wiring is quite fiddly and it is a kind of semi-permanent modification, but the with is only held in with hot glue so peels away easily, and the LED & it's retaining clip slide out easily should I need to take it apart.

I was a little concerned about heat, but running NES/SNES/Megadrive emulators it gets warm, only slightly warmer when running the N64, but if it gets too hot I just take the lid off: but so far, no issues.

@Danorak1981 Well that was helpful - thanks! I saw the guide on their site, but didn't know I needed to do that RPi config for the ControlBlock if I wasn't installing a switch or controllers (yet). I'm brand new to this type of thing, but I'm loving it.

I followed the guide (I'm also an idiot), and it seemed to install correctly. I'll need to connect my switch to the ControlBlock before I know for sure that my setup works. Thanks again!

I made the observation in the past that using a high-quality USB cable also plays a major role: A thicker cable leads to a lower voltage drop when the Rai needs a lot of power. You might want to try out another cable.

I think you could use that and just not use the extra pins.

    Alright quick update.

I went back through the SNESDev github page. https://github.com/petrockblog/SNESDev-RPi#snesdev-rpi

I was able to get my first controller to be recognized and it seems to be working correctly but I had to use putty to ssh in and run sudo SNESDev. If I close putty it stops working.

On the github page it says to run:
    sudo ~/SNESDev-RPi/bin/SNESDev &

This fails. I am am not sure what is going on.

    I also tried to run:
    Running SNESDev as a service

SNESDev-RPi comes with a script that allows SNESDev to be run as a service. The installation command for that is

    sudo make installservice

and that fails. I think I am close but I am still missing something here. Can someone who has set this up chime in?

Yes, it works well with a model 3. I use it for my bartop with RPi3.

"+" models are only available with Raspberry 1.

    Hey all
i managed to come right and thought i would share my findings

in this situation the device needs a n on off toggle switch
i used an on off switch on the power block pins and was able to boot and turn the device off.
the installation and instructions on the site work perfectly.

    thanks again

@Jeddo no worries. I've done worse, sometimes resulting in fried parts. I'm glad it was something easy. Sometimes you just need another set of eyes to look at the problem.

@petrockblog said in Ideas for further enhancements for controlblock:

@Gate So, in case of "arcade-axis2btn" you would not have any axes at all then?

in my case, I use only nes, snes, and atari emulator, so no need of any axes.
To be more versatile you could change the "gamepadtype" setting for a mapping file (keyboard and joystick).
    ex.: btn_1 : axe+1
    btn_2 : key_a

    @petrockblog Thanks for the info!

I don't have a Hot Air Rework Station, but I may be able to get my hands on one at work.

Can I just ask, what are your thoughts on the Kynar wiring in the link-would it be suitable? And one thing I cannot find the answer to (unless I have over looked it): how much height does the Powerblock add to the the Pi, just incase I decide to go for a new one?

    Cheers,
    Dan

I'd be interested to hear opinions on this too. I've not bought a Powerblock yet but it is on the to-do list, and I'd like to have everything on hand for when it arrives. I like the switch-will that switch definitely work with the Powerblock? I was under the impression push button switches won't work with the Powerblock? Maybe I've read wrong, I'm new to the RPi scene so learning a lot too!

Your English reads fine by the way!

I was using a green LED latching switch.

I've since switched to a metallic recessed one:

I still have some spare green latching ones if anyone needs one.
