@mitu said in Noob questions about multiple controllers and USB boards:

It's in the get started section - https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Controller-Configuration/. ES tries to cover for all possible buttons and joysticks present on a PS or Xbox controller. There's also a video linked which shows this process.

I've seen that, and I guess I'm not fully grasping how it's going to behave because that only shows "one controller detected". I assume that "one detected" is because one USB is device is plugged in in that example, and it's offering the options which go with that controller (SNES, Xbox 360, PS3, etc.) being plugged in. It doesn't explain how the menu will look when I have two separate USB boards and possibly a third (i-pac2 with ball and spinner), and what will be presented as options for each. I assume with my custom-built cabinet, I will get some sort of "generic controller" detected, so I am wondering what options it will give me. It also isn't clear where/when/if the hotkey action options appear - it lists the defaults at the bottom but not in the format of the stuff above. Are the hotkey action items listed in order to be assigned, or do they default as indicated and you can only change them by going into the config menu?

Also, one post I saw seemed to indicate that if you reassign a hotkey action to a single button on your cabinet (rather than leaving it as "hotkey + (button or joystick direction)", then all the other hotkey actions must be assigned a single button and can't remain as a two-press action. Is that correct?

Each console has its own gamepad - see this page for a detailed overview. The main variation is within the Arcade games, where it really depends on the game - but that's not really my area of expertise. You can look up various builds posted on the forum for real cabinets and their setup and others might chime in and give you advice.

Yeah, I've read various threads opining on button arrangement, but my question is really a derivative of the above questions; I'm less worried about arranging the buttons for my gameplay and more concerned about what other buttons I should have on my cabinet in order to make it easy for my little kids and for visitors to play.

    Thanks for you answer!

I didn't know about the different emulators but I was using Mupen64plus which has his own config...
I tried lr-mupen64plus but the cinematics appears black sometimes and the game crashed a few times...

    So a (re)switch on Mupen64plus.

Just in case someone has the same issue I drop here the configuration issue I had:
In the config file (/opt/retropie/configs/from_retropie/configs/n64/mupen64plus.cfg) I had this line:

    # Joystick event string for stopping the emulator Joy Mapping Stop = "J1B10/B9"

The combination B10 (hotkeys) and B9 (start) seems to be ok for me BUT my controller was J0 not J1. It fix the "stop emulator" command. Now I have to check for the load/save state commands.

Thanks again for you answer. It really helped me :-)

@beastrow I had a problem of not having the game play properly with a lot of lag on the video but the audio was fine. I changed my power source to an official raspberry pi one and it plays now but the sound disappeared. I deleted the data file to let it parse a new one and it's all working well know.
    I have a working lair and dle21

The thing is, I've tried everything.
Last night, I had it where the left stick worked, except it would not go up.
The right stick would open the configuration menu, in addition to firing.
Some how I got it reset, but now I can't get the left stick to work, and from what i'm reading, that's the one that should by default?

PS. BTW, the Debian install links from opensuse.org appear to be broken on the .sh script as there is only a folder for Debian 9.0 now - Debian 8.0 isn't there anymore.

Hey, i wanted to ask a somewhat related question: what could be the reason that my screensaver never plays genesis snaps when the screensaver is running? Every system i have on my retropie 4.4 makes an appearance as a random video screensaver and it doesnt matter if the snaps are located within the emulationstation folder or in the rom folder for the system itself. I'm just puzzled as to why my genesis games don't show it. Would it have anything to do with having changed all mentions of megadrive to genesis within emulationstation and this having borked whatever emulationstation looks to when seeking random videos?

Well this is an interesting one I tried setting this input a few times and the triggers werent updating right. After i deleted (reset/clear the inputs through emulation station) it worked. Something must have been amiss somewhere.

I can see whats going on with the hotkeys in the list now it looks right.

ps the system(raspian) was up to date not sure if it was some binary update that fixed it.

If anyone is experiencing problems with xbox360 controllers update from binary's (always do the system as well). Clear your inputs through retropie setup and reboot and set your controller up and the jobs a good one. My triggers wouldn't set right they where double/tripple pressing without resetting/clearing the input first hope this helps anyone with the same issue.

If interested, I can also raise another PR at some point regarding my post above, where I have custom launching scripts for A500, A600, A1200, and CD32 and a modified emulators.cfg to suit. Maybe you can take a look at it and see if you are happy to add it in. I know it's x86 only and probably not a priority but I think it improves on the defaults for those who use it.

@GrandMasterYoda That doesn't seem to be a problem that Kodi or RetroPie can solve, but your VPN software. This forum is for RetroPie and related gaming questions - if you have a problem with your VPN then it's best to address it on their support channel (forum/mailing list/etc.).

I went through the FC30 stage, and ultimately moved on to Xbox One bluetooth controllers due to them being a little easier on my carpal tunnel. I had horrible problems with bluetooth disconnects on both, until I purchased/installed a USB Bluetooth adapter. Now, I have no problems at all. You'd be surprised how much this helps.

Might want to check out my advice here: https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/19950/xbox-one-blue-tooth-joy-pad-connection-problem/3

I believe you should only need to follow items 4 and 5 as the other instructions are Xbox One bluetooth specific. (Basically - Buy/install the adapter, disable onboard bluetooth, re-pair your joysticks/edit any additional configs items)
