@thord I did what you said and the problem persists. I'm on my original install of 4.0.2 on a Pi 3b. Should I try to update all installed packages? Why am I asking? That's what I'm going to try anyway. With this problem I've also noticed that my iclever bluetooth, mini keyboard will function during a dreamcast game, but only in the command prompt (which displays along with the game for glitchy reasons I presume). The game won't respond to the keyboard after idle. I might try plugging a usb ibuffalo snes pad. Wonder if it works to plug it in after the idle glitch. I also wonder if my iclever keyboard, bluetooth dongle is interfering with the on chip bluetooth.

I tried my official Microsoft Xbox One Wireless Receiver for Windows back in RetroPie 3.6 but couldn't ever get it to be recognized. I picked up a generic Xbox 360 Receiver (from either AliExpress or Light In The Box for around $9) and I've already got many Xbox 360 controllers and those work very well with RetroPie.

@TechieAndroid What was causing the games not to run? I'm having the same issue? Thanks.

RetroPie is Raspbian Lite - it's still a full version in the sense the desktop etc can be installed later. It's not cut down in any way that would make it incompatible.

That should work fine. You can't use that to power on btw - at least not without additional hardware - just shutdown or reboot.

@xleguill not supported in RetroPie. Recalbox has multi language emulation station if you need it.

@jsawhite for lr-fba-next, there is a core option that sets the neogeo pad to either gamepad or arcade (not sure what that does.. maybe this?), and additionally there are various combo macros. i think this is where you should look... i'll have a look myself later as this sounds like a cool idea!

@Hyell Thanks for your effort, but it doesn't work.

    The same happens:
The LCD works and shows everything, until the Retropie logo appears. After that and when emulationstation is loaded, the LCD keep working but now has a blinking cursor and ONLY shows messages from emulationstation (the game is on HDMI), like errors, various settings from emulationstation, legal info for MAME, etc.

If there is a setting to "tell" emulationstation to do the opposite, to start outputting the games on LCD this time and keep HDMI for messages only, it would be nice.

Awesome guys, thank you so much.

Control alt F2 allows me to enter my username/password and then use the command line.

Also: Yes, my theory was right about the metadata loading.

The problem has been solved. Thank you!

@BrockBoyts said in Active vs Passive Cooling:

    @dankcushions

I was hoping that overclocking would fix any subtle lag issues. This has mostly been noticeable in games that require accuracy.

well, overclocking can potentially improve framerates on CPU-bound games, but 'lag' can mean many things. if you mean input lag, well that can potentially just be a problem with the emulator or emulated hardware, or your controller, or your tv, etc. overclocking won't help here.

    Examples:

Galaga on Lr-Mame2003 without shaders and overlays plays super smooth. If I turn on the overlay and shaders (CRT effect) there is a subtle lag.

this sounds like GPU being your bottleneck, or possibly RAM being the bottleneck. you'd need to experiment with overclocking both to resolve this (or perhaps use lr-fba-next and see if that does better with this game)

Metal Slug 1 on Lr-Mame2003 when two people are playing and there are a bunch of sprites are on the screen there is noticeable lag.

this is probably just what the original hardware would do. there are other solutions - see https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/2305/metal-slug-slowdowns-rpi3

Mega Man Zero games on GBA have a lag too and those games need accurate response times to play.

    no experience with this.

I am only considering a cooling solution because the inside of the cabinet gets pretty warm and may contribute to the pi overheating if I overclock. If I do not overclock the Pi I have no concern for the heat.

the pi is pretty good at protecting itself from heat and will let you know when it's temperature throttling via on-screen symbols. IMO if you still want to overclock, just do it and then work out if cooling is required from how it reacts.

@Sito said in Keyboard control in MSX emulators:

I had the same problem with some games like River Raid and Gun Fright, where in the main is being asked how many players are going to play by pressing "1" or "2" on the keyboard. You won't be able to use the joypad for input.
I didn't succeed in binding the 1 and 2 keys to any of the buttons of my joypad.

But the solutions is actually very simple (assuming you have connected both a Keyboard and Joypad to your RaspberryPi):

On the joypad, use Select + X buttons to enter in the RetroArch main menu. In the mainmenu, choose Settings --> Input --> Input User 2 binds In User 2 binds, select in User 2 Device Type the RetroKeyboard option. Go back to the RetroArch main menu by pressing B (on the joypad) three times. Go to Quick Menu and select resume Game.

Now, whenever you need to input any character, you can use the keyboard...

    Hey, that works!
Now I can use full keyboard in any game. It's time to play Metal Gear!
