@TMNTturtlguy I am indeed swapping out all of my FBA roms to the new version. I was under the impression that there could be problems using old roms with newer FBA, and it is best to update to the corresponding romset?

@casadero said in How do I add scanlines to MAME in retropie 4.2?:

@caver01 : correction to my recent post: I put the ROMs to the MAME-MAME4ALL folder and, later, to the ARCADE folder. there is no folder like "lr-mame2003" folder on my USB stick, but a "mame-libreto". I still do not know the difference between all these MAME Emulators, but I will start some research about that issue the coming weekend.

      Please read this.

Emulators come in two basic flavors in RetroPie--standalone or libretro core. The standalone are just that--they run independently of other frameworks. They are configured independently. They might have their own way of generating display effects (advancemame for instance has some RGB effects that can be turned on). The libretro cores are all emulators that run inside of the RetroArch framework. These can share common settings for controls, video, etc. The CRT-PI shader is for RetroArch, so it won't apply to the standalone emulators, whether they are MAME or something else.

Given the two kinds of emulators, there are several different versions of MAME. Some are standalone, some libretro cores. Each requires their own ROM versions. Generally speaking, you should only use ROMs that come from a set with a version matching that version of MAME. If the location of your ROMs allows you to choose more than one emulator, you do that using the RUNCOMMAND function (which you should also click and read).

Be sure to use the correct neogeo.zip file. And where did you place this file? While most BIOS files go into the /home/pi/RetroPie/BIOS/ directory, the neogeo.zip goes into the same directory as the roms. Also, would check via runcommand menu that the default emulator is correct for the rom.

      Good luck!

I found one! A friend asked me for a seperare Tate-Card to switch to when using his Tate-Display. Simply use the Arcade-Sytem instead of seperate Mame and FBA-Systems. Enter a game with Mame2003-core, activate rotation and save the system configuration file (not game or core override!). Done. The rotation setting will also apply to all FBA-games.

@udb23 Since I wrote it too hastily, here's an article with a few more details then:

      http://www.usgamer.net/articles/daily-classic-un-squadrons-strange-identity-change

It is an overall fun game, but I wasn't aware the SNES was actually somewhat different, with more of a RPG vibe to it where you buy new planes. Need to check that out.

Well, the 3 B/B+ can be shortened considerably, there are hack projects for that. The battery is definitely overkill as well. My battery life is easily 8hrs+ with a 10,000 mAh battery. I can use a prefab sound card from Adafruit and lose that bulk too. The display won't be a problem it is actually very thin and the same footprint as the Pi. However, I really love the feel of a full size controller, and I don't think I'm stuffing that combo in my pocket any time soon.

However, when I finalize the build, I'm going to be ADDING weight in the form of RF shielding of the sound board and Pi/display. The sound board is picking up too much crap no matter how many filter caps I throw in the circuit.

Sure you can. The "right opacity" is very dependant on personal taste.

This is great! I am going to do some tweaking and let Tash (my beta tester) give it another go. :)

@weed_snorkeler said in Changing the menu key in mame4all:

@riverstorm I don't have a desktop, I only have a laptop. I've been turning off my Pi and editing the config files from the sd card. I'm going to need to get a keyboard some time soon though, I need one.

Ah, that makes sense! I was like this is a first. I do keep an extra keyboard and mouse handy and also the Logitech K400 Plus (wireless w/dongle) which I mainly use for the Pi as it's has an almost full size keyboard, glide/mouse pad off to the right (all-in-one) and the USB dongle is the micro type. It's well suited for doing tweaks in front of the TV. They always seem to be on sale every few months at half price for $20.

Ok, I'll try it. I used mame4all because I heard it had the best performance. Thanks for the tip.

We were having a discussion if mame4all is a valid emulator in this thread (the last 3 or 4 posts). I am a strong advocate for mame4all-pi for the reason you stated and few others. I think the feature and ROM differences are subjective to your needs and I'm not sure if anyone has done any type of actual benchmarking as to which runs games better/smoother framerates. I was a die-hard mame4all-pi user and only converted due to some feature enhancements. I do use lr-mame2003 as my default @dankcushions has made some nice tweaks to improving lr-mame2003 over time.

Another thing I don't care for that wasn't listed in that thread is when you pause in lr-mame2003 the screen goes blank/black which seems simple enough but it's a bit annoying for some reason when you're used to mame4all-pi where the screen is "froze" on pause. It helps to see where you're at before un-pausing. It's easy enough to get around by disabling pause in lr-mame2003 and using Retroarch to pause but I had a dedicated P button on my box that no longer works but the joystick is fine.

For me it's minor issues/polish but not enough to stop me from using lr-mame2003 and I do keep mame4all-pi ROM set handy if needed. I think mame4all-pi is so universally ported it will always have a place. I would try both if even for contrast. I have it on a iPad even and it runs well but there's not much to say for the controls on a touch screen. :)
