I don't think so because reverting the config file through a re-install did not fix the issue.

@golaat Yes and no. Since some of the emulators run inside retroarch, you are somewhat tied to that environment, but with lr-mame2003 you can actually work around it. You COULD go in and set all of your player 1 inputs to “nul” (don’t use curly quotes like I did here). This is unique for this version of mame because it still “listens” to RAW keyboard inputs. You then have to go into MAME and map keys using the ALL games menu as opposed to just THIS GAME and you will have a nice clean input setup which is what I already proposed above.

SOLVED! I figured it out, it was exactly what I thought it was, my own issue and I am a dumbass. Since the config was saying "no config found for virtual bou" I knew there had to be a typo somewhere. I checked the configs the other day and didn't see a typo, BUT it was on the command line of the code that I couldn't see (it is too long) because I couldn't scroll with my controller, I plugged in my keyboard and when I scrolled over on the command line and sure enough I had typed in "virtual bou" since "y" is next to "u" that was my bad. I corrected the letter, restarted ES and boom good to go!

ok for mods/admins to mark this as SOLVED if needed, this was totally my issue! I guess for others with future reference if it says "no config found for <system>" check the command line and SCROLL OVER to see what you typed. I'm truly an idiot!

@RedBatman in the end you will need to move the files to the right place as the RetroArch version that's installed/installable now requires it, according to your description.

Now all I have to do is get my Pi back to where it was before I broke Sudoers and see if I can actually get the retroarch.cfg files to save and work properly. Almost forgot that's what this thread was originally about.

The only way to get the type of global functionality you're looking for is with external controller mapping software. I favor xboxdrv and have put together a guide here relating directly to RetroPie, but there are a few other solutions also, such as Linux Joystick Mapper.

If I navigate to this section on the UI it will only change the hotkeys for the system I am in at that moment
eg: Mega Drive?

All the other systems will still be set to the defaults?

Is there a way to change all the systems at once from putty like a master retroarch.cfg file?

Inside: /opt/retropie/configs/SYSTEM_NAME/retroarch.cfg.
If I go into each of the systems I use can I change the hotkeys for each system in this file?
