Just add a line at the end of the existing config.txt with the required dtoverlay option. Lines beginning with # are just comments and will be ignored by the Pi bootloader.

@mitu Just wanted to say thanks for the help on this, it really means a lot. After losing some heart, I took another look over Christmas and the reset you suggested solved my joystick problem as well, so I've had a blast over the break playing on it.
Next stage is to go back into the retroarch.cfg and configure the second joystick when friends are around, and then it'll be good to go.

Upstream will probably take some time to fix the build problem, but we should have a workaround in RetroPie-Setup for it. Just update RetroPie-Setup and the installation of the core should work.

@mitu I had no idea the Pixel environment was a thing. Just rebuilt my RetroPie and it works much better, thanks

Had the same problem but the kernel8 thing just broke all my games (black screen whenever I tried to load any game).

The solution that worked for me was to add these lines to my retroarch config file:

parallel-n64-cpucore = "cached_interpreter"
mupen64plus-next-cpucore = "cached_interpreter"

For context, I just got my Pi 5 8GB and running full Raspberry PI OS. Installed retropie and all the emulators from source.

This is old, but a simple solution in mame2003 and mame2003-plus.

Display the mame menu. This can be opened via core options (under system).

In the menu, select the top option input (general)

Then for config menu, select it to clear the current bind, then quickly double tap on it to bind None.

Turn off the mame menu in core options, return to game for changes to take effect, then close the game.

@canisgames omg thank you! It looks like there was an update to the kernel8.img on Jan 2 as well.

After running the rpi-update command to update my firmware it was as you described. I was able to add the kernel=kernel8.img back to the config file and my n64 games are working with audio now!

@mitu thanks, the issue is now resolved. I believed I disabled 4k at various points but I thought that framebuffer_width and height were sufficient for that. Using hdmi_group=1 and hdmi_mode=16 resolved the issue.

The USB charger cube I was using (true Apple 12W) REFUSES to charge/power the Sony Controller! When I used a cheap no name USB cube it now connects and stays connected. Yay!
