Thanks for this, it finally forced me to figure out SkyScraper. OMG the SkyScraper output looks so much better than the default scraper, and it handled the CHDs like a champ.

The internal switch is turned on to safe shutdown and im running the latest version of Retropie, installed it today

Looks like the Nvidia driver I had installed was the culprit. I removed it and used the Nouveau one and Emulationstation now starts but launching games fails. I am troubleshooting further.

For an snes labeled controller, alter labels for x-box

Keyboard keys = controller buttons

Arrows = direction buttons
Z = B
X = A
A = Y
S = W
Q = L1
W = R1
Etc

I was able to make it working with:

hdmi_ignore_edid=0xa5000080
disable_overscan=0
overscan_left=0
overscan_right=0
overscan_top=0
overscan_bottom=0
hdmi_force_hotplug=1
hdmi_group=1
hdmi_mode=16
config_hdmi_boost=7

Then I got 60fps in Steam, but no image. After disabling the Nvidia overlay in the Gforce settings I had an image again but heavy framedrops. After setting Bandwidth limitation in Steamlink itself to "Auto" these were gone as well. Now Rayman is running with 60pfs, what results in no speed change of the game. Why the game reacts so badly on not having 60fps I did not found out.

@djmoss - I have the exact same setup as you (Pi4, pi2scart, mx7000). I have a couple of problems with overscan. Did you fix this through the config?

@dclegend By default, there are no onstart, onend scripts - it's an extension that can be used by users to add their own customizations.

@n2185x the distortion I faced with lt-atari800 audio was resolved by applying the patch in this linked thread. The patch, to my knowledge, has not made it into the libretro core

I can confirm that applying this patch and recompiling fixed my audio quality and buzzing
