UPDATE: I was able to fix the issue by going to RetroPie Setup > Core Packages and returning both the Retroarch hot keys and EmulationStation controls back to their defaults. Once I remapped the controllers again in ES, they carried over to RA.

@mitu I wrote it on Debian 12 with gnome fallback mode (x11)

Edit: I have now tested on Debian with wayland and it seems to work the same. The window refocus if I Alt-Tab. Although it seems that the standard emulationstation executable does not minimize on wayland for me for some reason.

I made a separate script that skips if wayland is in use as I have no issues with it and the first script introduced some weird behaviour..

I hade some trouble with this as well so I created a script that keeps the window active and maximized.

Though not really support, you can try to save the emulator from that old version (the entire folder /opt/retropie/emulators/vice) and copy it to the latest version.

When you say 'freeze', does this mean that even if you plug in a keboard and press F4 (to exit EmulationStation) nothing happens ?

Mapping are usually created based on the controller/gamepad name, so even if the gamepad disconnects and then re-connects the configuration would still work. I'm not familiar with Arcade1Up inputs - are they using an USB encoder for both players or each player is a separate controller ?

@Daistaar Not really. My inspiration is the Small Mac Project. I want to be able to output video throught a small 3d printed version of a Mac Classic and output at the same time on my TV.

With the new RaspiOS, the 64bit variant is recommended by the RPI folks for both Pi4 and Pi5. Furthermore, Pi5 cannot run a 32bit kernel so you'd end up with a 64bit kernel and 32bit OS/userland, which will

cause confusion for source installation, since most emulators/ports assume that if the kernel is 64bit, the OS is also. As a consequence, some source installations will outright fail since they compile for aarch64 (64bit ARM), but that won't work since 64bit dependencies are not installed.

TL;DR - if you have a Pi5, 64 bit is the recommended OS.

There I copied the file from my computer onto my RetroPie by drag and drop it in the Ports folder.

Then try:

python3 ~/RetroPie/roms/ports/main.py

Or if you've put it in a subfolder,

python3 ~/RetroPie/roms/ports/subfolder/main.py

The archive site doesn't automatically archives everything, though undoubtedly somewhere there's a backup of the Citra source code and probably also of their dependencies.

@mitu i discovered that the file i was trying to play had H.264 / AVC / MPEG-4 AVC / MPEG-4 part 10
codec

i tried playing a video from really old times whose pixel layout was the exact same as my spi display 320x240 codec of that file was Xvid this time it didnt play anything it just crashed

@AwesomeKingClem Yep, figured that out eventually, this seems about as close a replication as one could manage (all my bezels are for fullscreen height):
