datatype sizes aren't the same between those 2 archs, so you have to find some mean to pad them if you need to save them.

how can i downgrade to 17.6? If possible id like to use an old skin that i fixed when kodi was xbmc but wont work on 18.7.

Your OS (Debian 9/Stretch) is outdated and no longer supported; currently only Debian 10 (Buster) is supported and, unfortunately, cannot be upgraded in situ.

I suggest you to backup your roms and then install the current latest official image (currently 4.8) for your hardware from https://retropie.org.uk/download.

Then, flash the 4.8 image and restore your backed-up folders over the network share or by the method of your choice:

@jcissell1029 after days of wasted effort, I found this:

Once you've booted see the bit about EmulationStation not being found, you're dropped to a Bash prompt do:
sudo apt install rapidjson-dev
then:
sudo ~/RetroPie-Setup/retropie-setup.sh
From here you will select "Manage packages", then "Manage core packages", then "emulationstation", then "Update from source"

HOWEVER, there appears to be a syntax error as the script is named retropie_setup.sh and not
retropie-setup.sh
(Underscore, not dash)
so, to launch the script installation:
sudo ~/RetroPie-Setup/retropie_setup.sh

No, the only thing RetroPie starts is the splashscreen service and EmulationStation, none of which change the audio volume.

@windg retropie folder is for transfering files (they will be copied from the & back to the corresponding folder(s) on the OS partition), whereas the retropie-mount folder actually is for running the files from the external media

Yes.

It auto logs in. But when I SSH into the RPi using the pi user, I have to provide a password.

The password, if you haven't changed it, is raspberry. As configured by default, this is not required on the local terminal, only for remote logins.

@Max-1 i never used premade images and can recommend to build your own image.
Makes a lot of fun, you learn a lot and everything looks, feels and works for you as you want it ;)

Edit - looks a little heavy for me to do right now. I'm going to just run the retropie updater which will put me at 1.10 and patiently wait for the new RA t to be added

@Tieelo Did you fix the issue? I get the same error message trying to install from Extras.

@AlphaBetaPie if i recall you can set the resolution within the core options but i would never recommend/support the use of that emulator, as it was abandoned years ago: https://github.com/libretro/mupen64plus-libretro

please define "configuration". note that no systems/emulators will show up unless you have transferred games to your system.

I did as told, emulationstation auto config was disabled. I enabled it and also removed xboxdrv.
And it finally works! I could configure both controller, the configuration is kept in the game and even when rebooting I don't need to re-configure it again.

Thanks a lot, the auto config settings were an eye-opener!

I stand corrected, I did a fresh install again/installed safe shutdown script rebooted and seems to be working.

Going to try and reproduce to make sure maybe it was just the config.txt that got screwed up or something.
