Ok, I understand the process here, what I don't agree with is the fact that saving the configuration implies overwrite it as a whole, instead of just update changed values and leave unchanged ones as they were. This make SplashScreen and others unreliable, as they can be easily removed by mistake with just changing a single setting through the UI.
Just my two cents. Anyway, thank you for the --nosplashscreen flag advice.

I was having the exact same problem but with the PC Engine -> TurboGraphix 16. Thanks to this thread I've finally got that resolved!

Deleting the file at
/opt/retropie/configs/all/emulators.cfg
Put the ROMs back to the default emulators

Answered my own question. So my workstation has 3 monitors and a TV, the pi had this issue with the TV and one of them monitors. Works absolutely fine on the other 2 monitors though, and the TV in my living room where this was going to go anyways works fine with it as well.

Anyone know why this issue is occurring?

You are right on. I tried one of the controllers in Switch mode, and the other in Android mode and it works very well. Thanks. I looked around and couldn't find the error.

I don't know if maybe the retropie images are thought to be played on 16:9 monitors?

RetroPie can use all sorts of resolutions, it's not a problem here. It was probably - badly - configured to use an incorrect aspect ratio, ask your friend's friend. We can't help you here, since we don't know what and how it's configured.

I had an issue almost the same as this. I have a pi4b with a 7” touchscreen. When I plug it in to my tv it starts fine color burst and command line show fine on my tv and the 7” screen together, but as soon as emulation station starts the picture goes away and only the sound comes through the TV. If I go into command line or pixel desktop the picture comes back on the tv. After a couple weeks of frustration I figured out if I take the power off the touchscreen everything will work perfect on my tv.

@mitu I've enabled both the options u showed in your post. It successfully. I was quite baffled because I saw the the Dt overlay option twice in the end of my boot config.

It turns out that md_lbl and md_ need to have seperate size values for the "X" for some reason... it seems to be fixed now:

Most of the themes are not designed for a portrait mode - but you can try some of the 4:3 and CRT designed themes. I remember one them ( crt-centered ) had a simpler layout, with video on top of the gamelist, which would maybe fit the bill.

EDIT: you can run the theme-gallery from the Configuration/Tools->Emulationstation to get previews for different themes, just to see how they fit on your screen.

@gordonfreemanjr do you have any other controllers plugged in? Did you map your keyboard as a controller? It may be worth going into RetroPie-setup and resetting your mappings and then remapping just to see if that fixes the light issue.

@mth75 The patches added by the RetroPie install script work only with the branch/version specified in the script. If you'd like to get the latest dev version, you should also remove the .diff being applied.
