@t3stin I don't know, I use a stock config and this is not set on my system. If you just want to test the sound, there's a command line speaker-test command you can use. Or download an .mp3 and play it from the command line with cvlc.

It appears that in /opt/retropie/configs/n64/InputsAutoCfg.ini that under the relevant controller there was no entry for B button, and A button was incorrect. I edited this manually to correct for this, but I still get the same problem when i run the emulator - e.g., my attempted fix makes no difference to how it actually performs!

I will try that, thanks! Sorry for being ignorant and reading the rules correctly..

On a somewhat related note: will retropie support CRT / 240p right out of the box?

@Kvitekvist if your display supports lower resolutions change the window size in the gles2n64.conf file to 640x480. Then when you launch a game, enter the runcommand menu before the game boots and change the default video mode for gles2n64 to 640x480.

@inolen thanks - your post made me realise that I could just put the TV into 4:3 mode, rather than try and make ReDream correct the aspect ratio somehow. Doh! Will try that.

@Darksavior That's what I was referring to. If you have saved out your retroarch config on older version the offset will be wrong (the aspect ratio is a number which is an offset into a list - they added a new aspect ratio, but not at the end, so it broke old configs).

@Dagna The beta image at: https://retropie.org.uk/download/
Might be unrelated, but I've had random issues with this build and previous ones, but devs can't reproduce it. For example, ES wouldn't save my inputs until I re-installed ES from retropie-setup. Maybe it's my bad card (a few months old) or the card reader's bad.

OMG I am a moron. As is often the case it was user error and such a monumentally stupid one. The one thing I hadn't thought of since I last played Sega CD was I use a different controller. With this one I guess since in most systems it doesn't matter I have been pressing one of the face buttons to start instead of start, whereas it matters that it is actually the start button on Sega CD.

    Here is a final snippet

    "May 03 12:11:25 lvl3: UIModeController::logInput( Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver (XBOX) ):Button 0, isMappedTo= a, , value=1
    May 03 12:11:25 lvl2: req sound [video.launch]
    May 03 12:11:25 lvl2: (missing)
May 03 12:11:26 lvl2: Attempting to launch game...
    "
    So no errors.....

But I have managed to find a fix.

I'm also using the gtx970 as my sound card. if I disable this retropie works fine.

Guess this will just be one of these really odd bugs that only effects me :)

    Thank you for your time

    Hey,

    it's me again.
I guess I am a bit closer. I was wondering why my custom gamepad driver which generates a uinput device is not working. By incident I started the game directly without the start script, so I could see the information output. One of the very first lines was "couldn't find keyboard event file". I recognized that my custom driver creates a eventX in /dev/input but not in the subdirectories by-id or by-path.
So I tried to create a symbolic link in by-id, pointing at my event.

Now the keyboard-emulating gamepad worked in the game!

Playing that a bit further I went back to my gamepad driver which behaves like a gamepad without keyboard emulation. Running on top xboxdrv with mouse and keyboard emulation. again with a symlink in by-id.

Now the regular gamepad-driver with xboxdrv on top worked in the game!

Only point is, that no regular keyboard is allow to be connected (maybe be game only uses the first keyboard?).
