@UDb23 You are referring to the concept of overscan. I think old CRTs often had slightly different borders where the image could be drawn. As a game builder, you maybe had exact specs on the monitor that would be used in the arcade cabinet, but best practice included placement of important items (like cockpit readouts, score text, etc.) within the "safe" area so that the image could be adjusted to fill the screen. Actually, the image may have been adjusted to go beyond the screen, ensuring all areas are covered. It's a bit like printing ink on paper using a full-bleed, knowing that the final piece will be cut such that your image goes edge-to-edge.

Anyway, I am glad you got it figured out.

@d8thstar Just a thought. . .What about the possibility that you are modifying the gamelists while Emulation Station is running? Have you tried putting the file into your ROMs directory while ES is not running? Then starting up and seeing if it picks up the list?

Also, where exactly are you putting the XML file? Notes above have suggested "the ROMs folder" but for you, since you are mounting an external volume, that probably means /mnt/MAME106/roms/ right?

@challenger2010 Apologies for bringing this back from the dead, I wondered if you'd managed to resolve this calibration of analog joysticks in advmame?

I am trying to configure some pots for a Warlords mame cab, and I have a nasty deadspot at 0,0 that I want to remove!

      Thx in advance (mame)

      Which game are you trying?

@codinghorror said in Advmame emulator not showing up in RetroPie 4.0.2?:

(Is there a good reason not to use advmame? I prefer it for vector games and the like?)

We generally prefer RetroArch cores for their ease of configuration. lr-mame2003 and lr-fba-next are a good compromise between a large ROM set and nice performance on Pi 2 and Pi 3. It's also easy to find the ROMs, search Google for "mame2003 reference set" or "fba 0.2.97.38 reference set".

However, AdvMame is the only way to play vector games smoothly.

If you put ROMs in the mame-advmame directory and mame-libretro directory, you'll end up with two RetroPie menu entries called MAME which can be a bit confusing/messy. You can work around this by using the arcade directory for one type of ROM (say all your vector games in arcade and all other games in mame-libretro), or you can use a theme with different AdvMame/libretro-MAME header images.

Is there artwork that makes AdvMAME set apart from MAME in the GUI?

Ahh, I get it now. Yes, you can do this:

I did the same thing too except I created a sub-folder within the roms directory and called it mame-samples and edited both the 1.4x and the 0.9x versions of the mame-advmame.rc file and referenced my folder there as I found some of my games were using the 0.94 version while others were using the 1.4 version of the rc file.

On the sample path line, I appended the updated folder path to the existing entry.

      dir_sample /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-advmame/samples:/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/arcade/sample:/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-samples

Any new audio samples I'll download will go to this folder instead of within the samples folder of ADV-MAME.

The samples work when they're zipped, not extracted.

      @caver01
I can't get it to start.
I have tried multiple versions of the game but still cannot make it start.
I run "floob-retropie-attractmode-v03-02-MAY-2016" image with NO updates because when updating I got switched and unusable controller buttons and stick problems.

I will try to do a clean retropie v3.7 with emulationstation only build for raspberry pi 2 and see if everything works. But this will take some days.

      Thanx :-)
