@hsus I doubt it, and why update if everything works as you would like? I haven’t updated my builds in a year or so. Too afraid some game (especially arcade) may just stop working.

@vmonteco said in How is EmulationStation launched at boot?:

To what shell is it supposed to be related? I ensured to set back the default shell to /bin/bash for my users (both pi and root).

It's meant to be running in Bash - could work with other shells, but it's untested. If you don't have the file, then make sure you've configured autostart and enabled EmulationStation on boot.

Is this something I can update on there, make a new backup image, and flash to my newer pi?

Update your system from the RetroPie-Setup on the old system - say yes when asked to update the included kernel and OS packages - then transfer again a backup to the new system.

Just for the record, this command removes write permissions from the file:

      sudo chmod -w /boot/config.txt

Restore them only for the owner (the default) with u+w instead of -w.

But note that any script that runs with admin rights can change the file nonetheless.

edit: Ah, I noticed the logical flaw in this. The file is owned by the admin user root and it is already only editable by the owner. So removing w wouldn't make any difference in this case. 😇

@mitu said in how to make /boot/config.txt read only on raspbian:

That might set your whole system as 'read-only' (i.e. any modifications are discarded on reboot). I'd appreciate if you wouldn't use any fowl language, we're trying to - ironically ! - keep the forum an all ages place.

alright, sorry about that, new to retropie and it's forum.

also, about what you said about the "whole system", it said boot partition when i enabled it, but at this point i give up.
it's gonna suck to have to format my pi but whatever, i reinstalled raspbian 6 times on tuesday trying to get retropie to run on a raspbian installation, before realizing that it wouldn't launch any emulators.
(maybe it not launching anything was related to the screen issue..?)

The project at https://github.com/swkim01/waveshare-dtoverlays offers only the new driver setup for the display, it doesn't provide any scripts.

      can you elaborate?

Sure. You want to handle 2 video configurations - output to HDMI (which is default) and via the LCD. Save the default config.txt in /boot/ as /boot/config-hdmi.txt. Install and configure the LCD drivers (modify the config.txt) accordingly, make sure it works, then copy the config.txt to /boot/config-waveshare.txt.

      Create 2 scripts in /home/pi/RetroPie/retropiemenu

      hdmi.sh, containing #!/usr/bin/env bash cp -f /boot/config-hdmi.txt /boot/config.txt lcd.sh, containing #!/usr/bin/env bash cp -f /boot/config-waveshare.txt /boot/config.txt make the scripts executable by running chmod +x /home/pi/RetroPie/retropiemenu/hdmi.sh chmod +x /home/pi/RetroPie/retropiemenu/lcd.sh

Now, when starting EmulationStation, you'll have 2 new entries in the RetroPie system - HDMI and LCD, executing one of them will switch the video output configuration. After running one of the entries, you'll have to reboot to activate the new configuration.

@MegaTimX said in Rpi 4, No display on my 3440x1440 monitor, works perfectly on my 4k TV.:

Hopefully in a future update HDMI support for this monitor(resolution?aspect ratio?) for the Rpi4 will be added.

Unless someone reports it upstream, I don't think it will be magincally solved.
Someone reported something similar this last year and for them it has been solved with a firmware update, see https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=248037&start=25.

If the recommendations in that topic won't solve your issue, then I suggest replying to that topic and adding your own monitor EDID for the RPT engineers to check it.

We don't support 3rd party images, especially the ones sold with ROMs and RetroPie. Ask the seller for support, we don't support scammers that sell RetroPie preloaded - it's against the project's license.

You mean instead of starting EmulationStation on boot ? If so, then edit the /opt/retropie/configs/all/autostart.sh file and add your own command before the emulationstation #auto line.
To determine which is the correct command line, you can use either the advice from the Docs or just start your game, then open /dev/shm/runcommand.log and see the actual command line used to launch it.
