I think the OP would like to choose some kind of low power sleep mode in ES to "shutdown" the Pi, but not completely turn it off. And then OP wants to be able to wake up the Pi simply by pressing a key on an attached keyboard, just like how you wake up a Windows computer or Mac.

I don't understand why a special hardware should be needed, but I am also confused why there seems to be no simple software option to enable such behavior? In fact such behavior should be the default to safe power with sleep, and allow easy wake-up by pressing space or any key or clicking the mouse, just like is has been on any PC or Laptop for a decade, and such is the default on pretty much all set-top boxes like Roku, and consoles like PS4 and Xbox One consoles, too. However, on those, it is a button on the remote or wireless controller that wakes up the device, not an attached keyboard. Using an attached keyboard should be simpler, since Bluetooth is not required to be kept on.

EDIT: Apparently, in order to save cost as much as possible, the Raspberry Pi board has no power management whatsoever, e.g. no sleep/suspend modes, no wake-up, nothing compared to what is found in most other modern hardware. There are a few add-on boards that provide such power management, such as sleepy-pi or witty-pi, but bottom line, there seems to be no easy way to do what the OP requested.

@edmaul69 I went to configure edit, configure basic libretro emulator options, configure additional options for fba, choose joypad order, and 0 for my snes controller.

That guide is outdated (I think it was around RetroPie 2), the mk_arcade_joystick module can be installed from the Retropie setup drivers menu.

@tmntturtlguy wohoo! you are my man! or turtle or whatever! thank you very much! It works now. Just needed to swap the es_input.cfg too for emulationstation config. I tested in the emulator before without es_input.cfg and there the controller worked. Just config in ES was missing.

Finally I can soon finish my project :) Thank you!

@icode You replied to a bunch of old topics and this is bad forum etiquette. To advertise your project, you should have opened a new topic under Ideas & Development and show your product, instead of spamming old - related - topics with it.

Should it matter than I can't seem to access /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch-joypads/? When I connect to my Pi from my MacBook, Finder shows that folder as empty. But if I attempt to drag a copy of 8bitdo SNES 30.cfg from the /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch/autoconfigs folder to retroarch-joypads, I get an error. On my PC I can't even open the retroarch-joypads folder.

I am currently working with 64gb mlp image

Problem is this. 3rd Party images are not supported. You should ask MLP as nobody can predict the setup. Also, https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first - you dont even say what version of Mame? Reimage, post details of your setup and help becomes possible.

      @melvin-fox Appreciate the encouragement.

I've had to reconsider the design and features of the enclosure as I was relying on somebody else to build it and now am unsure on when or if this will happen anytime soon. Using an arcade stick with the Pi was the priority so for now, the Pi will stay as is and outside the initial build (version 1). I'll continue to power it as I always have.

As this is my first arcade stick build and likely to be a temporary solution, it's very low budget. It's currently housed in an cardboard box! I'll look into upgrading it into something more classy once I can establish how much use it's going to get. I received all the parts last week and spent some time on weekend wiring everything up to ensure it was all working.

I'll reconsider the options we discussed here once it's upgraded and decide if an all in one arcade stick/PI solution is the better option. More importantly, if it can be achieved using the few tools I have access to whilst keeping costs to a minimum.

@krakenrelease Your first post is a link to your site with an affiliate link to buy a controller? I don't think so.

Link removed - I was going to ban/delete your account, but I'll give you a chance to explain why it wasn't spam in case I have somehow made a mistake.

Yes, I just took a look at joy2key.py
      https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/blob/master/scriptmodules/supplementary/runcommand/joy2key.py
and it seems this was fixed already, it reads the user-mapping from Retroarch config! My system is just too old, 4.1, I will upgrade and test again.

There has been some discussion on controller localisation settings for ES where you could choose what help icons you want per your controller but that also has similar issues with mappings/integration with libretro's configs

You don't need a keyboard to access the Retropie-Setup script. You can manage packages through ssh.

      cd RetroPie-Setup/ sudo ./retropie_setup.sh

I've got the first twist on Nickell Andrew (riking) running.
When I start the Joy Con driver via an SSL-Shel it works fine.
But I do not manage to start the driver automatically at system startup.
