You can add shortcuts to your gamelist that will start with an empty file, thus disabling the auto-loading. Some emulators already have a similar shortcut (+Start Amiberry, +Start Fuse), you can replicate the setup for others.

If you prefer working from the desktop, then you can leave RetroPie alone and just install the emulators manually on a Raspbian + Desktop image.

note that for retropie emulation purposes, there is no performance/compatibility benefit with >1GB RAM on pi systems. RAM size is simply not a bottleneck.

the 4GB pi4 model is relevant for those who want to the raspberry pi OS desktop, or as a server, etc but emulators for the systems that the pi supports don't have large RAM requirements.

@roslof Hi, not sure of the correct etiquette of commenting here, but I just wanted to take a moment and thank you for your efforts on your Retropie & N64 compatibility spreadsheet. I have been referencing it for some time now as I continue to build my arcade collection for my Pi400, but I checked it yesterday and noticed you completed it recently! A massive undertaking by you, and congrats! And I wanted you to know that I (and I'm sure others) appreciate your efforts! Good job! :-)

Kind of you and glad you've made use of the sheets. The project isn't over, as I update it from time to time when I have chunks of time available. Takes a few weeks to go through the ROMs, so can't do this with each major emulator release. Also some good help from a small number of people keeps me on my toes.

Thinking about handling CHD games next... We'll see.

@agtrigormortis Yeah, I have that problem with several games I'd like to have. The 1992 X-Men beat 'em up is a prime example. Apparently I missed the boat for it being on XBox and Google Play. It's too bad companies don't do more collections and ports for those who can't afford to be arcade collector enthusiasts and don't want to be pirates. But on the bright side there are a lot of options for many of the best arcade games in the collections that do exist.

@slim-shady There isn't a native emulator for it, but you can run it through lr-mess.

See this thread for details on how that core works, as it's a bit complicated to set up.

Been playing around and yes it does play quite nicely these days. Its been a while since I tried snaps on Pi0's, I think last time I did try it omxplayer caused some weird overlapping issues.

I've managed to get the size down quite a bit. I could probably increase a little as the video file sizes are typically smaller than the boxart! I've settled on 320x240, no sound and 10 seconds. Looks fine on the small screen, usually 10 seconds is enough to get an idea of what the game is like, and the sound can sometimes be a little rough so not an issue losing that. Also limited to 30fps as a lot were 60.

      I used ffmpeg with commands: -i input.mp4 -r 30 -s 320x240 -ss 0 -to 10 -an output.mp4

      mkdir trimmed for %%a in ("*.mp4") do "d:\ffmpeg\ffmpeg" -i "%%a" -r 30 -s 320x240 -ss 0 -to 10 -an "trimmed\%%a" pause

Created a little batch file and it does them pretty quickly.

Filesizes massively reduced, one collection was 572 games. scraped videos took 1.99GB! trimmed versions took just 137MB

      I'm glad I asked a silly question now :)
