@blackshadow13 Apart from samples for some games, there's also those that have CHD files for them. I saw a set and it was huge and well over 120 GB. If you do have to get a set i recommend a macchanger and VPN for pc anonymity. You know because Nintendo has been harming emulation and is trying to label it as piracy.

Maybe the particular ROM became corrupted.
Maybe that particular ROM isn't correct for the core, but was "close enough" (not really a thing) for a slightly different core? (e.g. MAME2003, MAME2003plus, MAME2010, etc.) There could be a variety of reasons. I agree, specific logs are the best "next step".

@alphabetapie as always, the docs explain this:
      https://retropie.org.uk/docs/lr-mame2003/#nag-screen
      https://retropie.org.uk/docs/lr-mame2003/#skip-warnings-screen

you'll note both point to the core options doc which show where the per-rom core options files are stored. it is not the same file as retroarch configs/overrides.

@adambegood KI 1&2 run for me on lr-mame2003, but graphically compromised, slow and lag. I use pi4.

Fair enough - I thought there was certainly some issue with them.

@romstar said in What's the correct aspect ratio I should be using as a config for a HAPP / VISION PRO 19" LCD arcade monitor for MAME Horizontal / Vertical games:

I changed the bottom line to mame2003_tate_mode = "enabled" which ultimately resolved my issue. now The vertical game is finally displaying the way it should on my HAPP Vision pro monitor mounted vertical !! At some point I'd like to build a vertical only list of games and have the menu / retropi running exclusively in vertical mode.

I knew it would change your life. I would not recommend trying to make the whole of retropie itself work in vertical mode yet, though. I stayed with my rotating monitor because rotating emulationstation causes performance issues. I believe it also became more difficult to rotate emulationstation on the Pi4 because the option was deprecated. I stayed with my Pi3b for my vertical MAME games for that reason and hope that a good solution for a fully vertical system presents itself later.

@dankcushions I wanted to also ask you what type of controller you use with your pi when you play MAME (and FBA & CPS games). Is it wired or wireless? What specific controller works best with arcade games?

The reason I ask is the way they designed the pi is awkward with the ports not giving us a traditional front or back so I don’t wanna fool with wires bending over the console.

Thank you guys for all the assistance. I have NO idea what step created those huge .cfg files. I'll have to keep an eye out for that.

You used 'Save Configuration' in RetroArch's RGUI. Either that or you enabled 'Save Configuration on Exit' from the RGUI.

That is ABSOLUTELY it. I've been trying to figure out (without luck) through trial and ERROR, how to get to where I can cut off the initial post period of some of the roms (like Defender) and auto-load the "clean" state as I used to do on my PC version of MAME.

Wow. Glad to have a solution and a reason.

@mitu I'm hoping to find a video or specific example of the steps to saving the state in say, Pepper II (or any game with a decently long POST) and then the settings to auto-load that post-POST save state each time the game launches.

I THINK I may have gotten the Retroarch settings correct, but don't see anything that says something like, "On load, use this save state for this game/core".

I added Pocket Challenge V2 in Cygnus Blue Flammes theme.
      https://github.com/DTEAM-1/cygnus-blue-flames

      system.png

You can run it with MAME or WonderSwan emulators
      With MAME, it's pockchal

You can use Development of module-script generator for lr-mess, lr-mame and mame standalone to install this system, but you will need to manually add WonderSwan emulator connections.

      And that did it.

After my last reply, I removed the gamepad physically, and put the alan-1 flight yoke adapter in position one of the RPI.

Then, I deleted the Mame-2003-plus config files at \home\pi\RetroPie\roms\arcade\mame2003-plus\cfg

I went into Retroarch config from Retropie and went to bind inputs for port 1. I changed it from Gamepad to Gamepad with Analog, set it to left analog, then mapped only the analog and four buttons.

Next, started up Star Wars, and mapped input for this game to the Analog X/Y and buttons.

      Deadzone gone!

Settings and everything held after reboot.

      Thanks for all the help!

I've never tried before to install 2016 before yesterday. I just recently finished getting the matching romset and wanted to give it a go.

I'm reading the PR and I see there is a potential fix but it hasn't been incorporated into libretro if I'm reading this right. I'll see if I can work out how the fix can be incorporated but I'm still learning the terminology workings of github.

I did see that set. It's on my list of things to get.
I see in my future getting a merged set of ROMs to save download time and creating my own non-merged set afterwards.

Do you think my 9 year old PC might be powerful enough to run most games on the latest MAME? I know it is leaps and bounds ahead of the Pi, but I don't know how PC processing power compares to arcade hardware.

EDIT: Forgot the age of my PC

How did you 'downloaded' ? If you've used the binary install, you'll get Mame 0.229 and lr-mame based on the 0.229 MAME version.

@dankcushions Yep, that was actually helpful! Thank you!

Here's what I did to make it all work.

Your cheat.7z file has to be in this folder:
      /home/pi/RetroPie/BIOS/mame2016/cheat

You can get the cheat file here:
      https://github.com/libretro/mame2016-libretro/tree/master/metadata

Load up a game in lr-mame2016 like "Donkey Kong" for example, and then go into options and "Enable Cheats."

      Screen Shot 2021-03-02 at 8.00.47 PM.png

You then need to RESTART the game (It does not say restart required in the options, but you have to restart) and then when you load up the game again, press TAB on the keyboard to get to the MAME Menu:

      Screen Shot 2021-03-02 at 8.02.10 PM.png

And then you can be just like Billy Mitchell and cheat to your hearts desire! :P
      Screen Shot 2021-03-02 at 8.02.43 PM.png

I've tested it in quite a few games as so far so good!

      Thanks again for the help!
