So I thought I had better post to say that I solved my own problem. I had to get sync from SCART pin 19 on the Pi2SCART's female connector, not pin 20. I did not know about male SCART leads swapping pins 19 and 20. I hope this post might help somebody else out one day.

Boom! Now it's working. Many thanks for the education on how the cache system works. I think I had a few missteps along the way where I was mounting the media folders as root and not the pi user, running into write issues initially. Once I resolved that, I apparently forgot to re-generate the gamelist.

Use the image from retropie.org.uk/download and it should work fine, we don't support 3rd party images.

try mupen64plus-gliden64. it should be the best performance and compatibility in general, but be warned that it's quite normal for n64 to exhibit poor performance on pi4, but several games can perform pretty well.

I tried uncommenting and changing the hdmi_group and hdmi_mode options in the config.txt, but no audio improvement.....just poor video!

from what to what? i suggest a 1080p60 mode in your config.txt (please provide copies of all configs you edit.). any further lowering of resolution you need to do can be done via the runcommand, although personally i leave everything at 1080p.

please also provide /opt/retropie/configs/n64/mupen64plus.cfg

It's meant to be running in Bash - could work with other shells, but it's untested. If you don't have the file, then make sure you've configured autostart and enabled EmulationStation on boot.

I'm having a similar issue with Sega CD / lr-genesis-plus-gx on the pi4. My files are .chd format. Worked in my previous build, verified the BIOS against the official documentation... nothing.

@DJMoss Adding active cooling eliminated the slowdowns I encountered while running some MAME or NeoGeo games.

Disabled full kms driver and went back to fkms still no dice.... however, I uninstalled wolf4sdl and installed ecwolf and it now works flawlessly. Thanks Ghost I will mark this solved for now.

Which files were conflicting? I'm having a similar problems, but with n64 instead.

Ok, so I tried it last night with my existing Pi3 image. It didn't make it past the 1st boot (kernel) screen. I got a number of error messages such as these:

Recovery4.dat not found

Recover.dat not found

startup4.dat not found

Error: 000044

Then there was another message stating that this Pi needs an updated version of the software.

Is there a way to do the update of SD card offline by mounting it?

Well, you could download the new SDL2 based version and replace the existing one. Since it's better to unpack the archive on the Linux system, you can run from the terminal

wget http://spatula-city.org/~im14u2c/intv/dl/jzintv-20200712-linux-rpi-sdl2.zip sudo mc /opt/retropie/emulators/jzintv

This will download the new version and open up MC with the location of the existing jzintv version on the left pane. On the right pane, browse for the .zip file you downloaded and then just press Enter over the selected file, you'll see the contents of the archive and you'd be able to copy the new jzintv binary over to the left.
