Ive been using samba on windows 10 for years without issues.

Also, if you have installed a firewall on your pi recently, that could be blocking. i think port 445 is for samba. have a google, u can find it out easily.

I would also double check the service status of smbd on your pi via command line, maybe the service cant start?

Maybe check from another device to see if you can access it. Because at the moment you have no idea if the issue is with windows or with your samba service.

Orrrr.....access your pi via Firezilla on windows using SSH to transfer your files.

Looks like the upstream libretro assets repository renamed them and the upgrade script just adds the new files, without removing the older ones. Maybe we should clear up the folder before the upgrade, to avoid this issue.

@mitu great, thanks. pi user password has already been changed from the default password. I'd say we can mark this help and support forum question to complete/resolved. Appreciate the help.

Sorry for the late reply, I didn't get notified for some reason.
I ended up using WinSCP, but I prefer it much less than the file share.
I'll try the registry fix and will report ASAP

@TrisM Though it is an old thread and I haven't asked/wondered aloud back over nearly 2 years ago, was considering it to be just a SEP. But as you revoked revived the thread I am doing it now, because now I am really puzzled/curious and doubting again: I have Windows 10 Pro on 2 desktop + 1 laptop machines since the EOL of Window 7 and a third desktop setup in 2020. None of them had this behaviour and on all four (3 on 22H2, my laptop still on 21H2) this Group Policy is still defaulting to "Not configured" [edit: besides Mitus remark in the early posts that it is disabled as default on some mints of win10 and that's not including home/pro] . And as Win10 is using "Language Packs" (as it was on xp x64) instead of regional versions of the os itself, I somehow doubt that updates are meddling with those settings differently for different regions and I am still unsure why this was changed on some user systems and whether it truly was done by the M$ Update or by other means and if yes under what circumstances this would have happened.

@mitu ok, it's a minor problem, if I click there and gets installed I just enter the menu again and hit remove samba components, you can close the topic if there's no easy fix :)

Webdav is not the same as CIFS, so the answer would be no. I'd advise against opening your local ROM folder to the internet. If you want to take your Pi on the go, then copy some ROMs locally and use that.

No, it's not related to the build, it happens with vanilla retropie and vanilla raspberry os too.
One ugly workaround I found is copying the files to a fat32 system and back to ntfs on my Windows PC before copying them over via Samba.
The intermediary fat32 step gets rid of any permission issue they have.

@BuZz I didn't copy anything on my 4.6 fresh install. Permission issue arose immediately. Of course I should be able to fix with chown.

SSH works. I can go into my terminal program and SSH into the pi just fine. But when I open CyberDuck (my FTP/SFTP client) and try to connect, it just times out. I have not changed the default password.

Are you sure you're using SFTP/SCP as a connection type ? FTP would not work with SSH.

When I try to connect to the SMB share through Finder, it won't accept my password.

Have you tried as 'Guest' ? That should work also - no problem using that on any version of RetroPie/Raspbian.

OK, works when i mount with option uid=1000 in autofs.network. Thanks for the hint.

That's not going to work, it's how CIFS/SMB works. You can't mount a host, just a share. Sure, the file browser shows you the available shares, but even on Windows (using Map Drive) you can't do that.
Maybe there's another solution with an intermediary program that reads the shares and mounts them separately so you can see them side-by-side, but underneath mount will still only map each shared folder.

@mitu it's just curios issue i obtain right now.
i open file explorer \Retropie and it's ask to me credentials.
Tryed to put some of combination like "pi/raspberry" "pi/retropie" "retropie/raspberry" and it's no works.
From file explorer i put \192.168.1.159 (ip of my pi4) and all shared folder it's be open whitout any request.
It's a windows 10 recent changes ? Lol.......

@Efriim Then the problem is the Samba share and not the Pi. Restart Samba after you the USB is mounted and then re-try to copy the file to the share.

@moltke44 I think you've been bitten by this change in Win10 which disables the guest browsing of shares, specifically for Enterprise and Educational versions of the OS. That's why for me (Win 10 Professional) still works, but not for you.
You can try the workaround described here, which I wouldn't recommend, especially if your computer is domain managed and there are security policies in place. Another option is to disable guest access in the RetroPie file sharing service (Samba), but that's a little more involved and it's not so straightforward.

@Link You can create a folder for the ROMs on the /media/usb0 partition, copy the contents of /home/pi/RetroPie/roms to it, then symlink /home/pi/RetroPie/roms to the folder on the HDD. Make sure you create a back of /home/pi/RetroPie/roms first, just in case.

Or you can bind mount the folder over /home/pie/RetroPie/roms with something like

mount -o bind /media/usb0/<Folder_name> /home/pi/RetroPie/roms
