All the trackballs are pretty much the same.
The hardest part is make sure you use multimouse in MAME settings if you have more than 1 mouse device, as you want to be able to set device specific sensistivity values.

You can figure out per games sensivity values with some info from here: https://web.archive.org/web/20160421175734/http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Spinner_Turn_Count

if you choose the option of creating a game-specific file "rom_full_name.cfg" (e.g. centipede.zip.cfg)

      input_player1_mouse_index = "n"

don't forget to add this second line:
      config_save_on_exit = false

just to prevent an override of the main config...

@Romstar An update on this the game is working / Marbles are rolling as it should!!! FIXED that with physically swapping the GreenX1 & Yellow X2 respectively for both players on the Ultimarc Opti-Pac. However the Opti-Pac Designed from ultimarc doesn't work with their software so I can't reflash the inputs that aren't being utilized. On the bottom of the Opti-Pac is "Left" & "Right" buttons / or rather left click right click on a mouse... which is fine, but NO INPUTS for Coin ! This is how I have it wired in case any one else is using the same setup:

      5v - RED
      Ground - BLACK

Blue trackball even though considered player one on the left (*Intentionally goes to the P2 side of the Opti-PAC)

      P2 X1 - Yellow
      P2 X2 - Green
      P2 Y1 - Blue
      P2 Y2 - Purple

Red trackball (*Intentionally goes to the P1 side of the Opti-PAC)

      P1 X1 - Yellow
      P1 X2 - Green
      P1 Y1 - Blue
      P1 Y2 - Purple

      Left P1 - Player 1 Start
      Right P2 - Player 2 Start

(*also to note the original Marble Madness control panel the notches in the trackball face the bend / curve towards the front of the player, where as the flat end underneath on the trackballs face going away / the monitor.)

Still no way to hook up 5 "coin" as of now ... In theory I can daisy chain it to a start button but that would be on FREE-Play which I don't want. So CLOSE to getting this the way I need it to be!

If the USB encoder makes all 7 buttons available, then you can navigate the UI and start games so it should be possible to make EmulationStation use it. As for the 2nd Player, you can use advmame for arcade emulation and it would be possible to split the encoder inputs to both, not sure about how practical it is though.

I'm using two SpinTrak spinners from Ultimarc (product page). They are very well made and spin quite long even with small flyweights.

I'm also building a Tron/DOT, but I'm reproducing a Mad Planets cab which also has those controls. You gotta bite the bullet and get Groovy Game Gear's Turbo Twist https://groovygamegear.com/webstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=86&products_id=311 It comes with an interface board. Its the only push/pull solution out there. I have a spinner, and I was going to mod it to push-pull, but tick-tock.

Then you have to bite an even bigger bullet and get this: https://na.suzohapp.com/products/accessories/50-9975-02 you can use any ol encoder for that.

I have all the parts, I just need to assemble it. Haven't had time. I should put the control panel together first then I could share it with you.

      cheers

@zoyx Try adding video_windowed_fullscreen = "false" to /opt/Retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg. This fixed the issue for me on Ubuntu 20 on x64. You'll also want to make sure this isn't being set to true in any of your directory or game specific config files, because they will override this setting.

There doesn't seem to be anything special about the devices - I see you only have 1 gamepad (which is considered by mame2000), but there are also a few keyboard and mice attached. Barring any permission problems (unlikely), I don't see why RetroArch excludes them - might be something to do with the core ?
Can you try running with Mame2003 or other RetroArch core (FBAlpha) to see if this changes anything ?

When is the include needed and not needed? (They use it in some examples in the link you provide, but not in others.)

It's not needed in a ROM config file.

You can reorient the controls 45 degrees in MAME 2003 and 2003-Plus by enabling the "4-way Joystick" core option. When that is enabled it also automatically rotates the 45 degrees games. You'll need to build from source to get this core option as it has only been in place a few weeks.

@tuntav This may be information you already know, but both mine are detect as mice and the spinner overrides the mouse. The only way I get around is to find out what device number each mouse is (spinner is detected as mouse) and then start game, go into retroarch and set the mouse input to the number assigned to what mouse I want to use and then save the game settings (not the core settings).

For example, my spinner is device 0 and mouse is device 2. For a game like Centipede, I just go into Retroarch, set Mouse Input from 0 to 2 and save the game config so only affects that game.

Have done the same for AdvanceMame, but that does not use Retroarch but a config file.

Again, you may already know this, so I am sorry if I am repeating information you already know.

The digital speed settings were key (overriding the default values of "10"). Your settings may vary.

The digital speed settings should not affect analog controls like trackpads.

There is no sensitivity for all games, each needs to be set according to the encoder wheel used in each machine.

Information here on finding the sensitivity value needed for each game:
