I think, personally for my system, the Splash screen is okay, I possibly could keep the systems menu as is on the default theme, then for the game selection for each system, have a custom background for each system (Edit: I don't actually think you can do this, I may have misspoke).

You actually can do that. Since the themes are based on layers it is possible to have one global background image and put different images on top. Setting up different images for each system can be done by the old method, where you have to create a separate theme.xml in its own systemname folder. Or by using variables and have all images in its own decicated folders.
The theme from @chicuelo is using that method to display different controller and character images on the carousel but it can easily be added to gamelist view.

An alternative would be to use a Samba client, and backup to a shared drive locally. If you have a NAS solution, like a Synology drive, you could use that, and open that up to the internet; in effect your own private cloud. That may help avoid these issues.

Just mentioned for anyone interested: There are two ways to do that: Either forward the ports for remote access directly to your NAS through your router, or set up a VPN and access the NAS from afar like you would from your LAN (a VPN is a remote expansion of your LAN).

@yahmez Interesting build. What are you running for emulators ? Just out of curiosity, do you find it's easy to see such a small screen playing , and how long does the battery last ? Nice of you to provide the schematics.

For emulators, anything with the old school standard button layout of of d-pad, a, b, start, and select. The screen is tiny but Gameboy and Gameboy color are perfect. NES is pretty good although text is pretty much unreadable unless you're very familiar with the game. I've been using only NES games which I'm familiar with. The battery lasts about an hour and with the power boost I can charge and play at the same time.

Hey man, what did you use to get the RPi3 HDMI output to VGA? I've seen a few convertor dongles online and was wondering what you used. I'm about to do the same thing here. Got my eMac, my RPi3, my Arduino and am just missing this info I think!

    nd on the home screen

It's already in Showcase. The theme folder name is called "pixel".

In your es_systems.cfg file, you can change the <theme> to pixel or just rename the folder to whatever your es_systems.cfg file is using.

That should have it show up on the main menu for you.

No. I use a True Type font. The gamelist font on my theme has some screen tearing. Some extra dots by some letters. On my Windows ES there is no problem. V-sync? Use of SVG? VRAM? Use of other font? Changed it all?

Btw. RetroPie is on a Ubuntu PC with a NVidia card.

I will send a photo from the thing. Hope somebody had a similar problem with the solution.

    Thank you.

Now I like your idea, but for me personally, it needs some work.

    The font is terrible.

I'm sorry, I can't sugar coat it. It's barely legible looking at it on my computer, and the size and spacing you need to use to help people read it takes away from the overall look. There are a thousand better pixel based fonts that would suit this far better.

The system logo is far too big.

It's taking up a ton of real estate that would be better used for a games list. The user should have an idea what system they are on, so it doesn't need to be what your eyes are drawn too. Personally I would scrap it all together, or maybe split the rating, etc box into 2 smaller ones and put the logo there and then have the information a bit smaller.

    Spacing/Consistency.

It seems kind of slapped together with a general idea of a layout, but no set spacing. The games list is closer to the top than the bottom as well it's further from the left side than the box other side of the screen. Visually it looks so much nicer when things are evenly spaced, and it's such an easy thing to master.

I'm attaching an image below of an old theme I had made like 3 or so years ago just as a suggestion as to how I would approach this. As you can see I create my full layout with guides and then build using them, even spacing between all the windows as well we as the edges.

    spacing

    Tiles

Use hard pixels since you're basing your design off of a pixel game. In both NES and SNES the tiles you've used are blurry, they should be crisp, as well the bricks in the NES should be the same size as the blocks. To be real picky I'd also say the bricks and blocks should be the same orientation since they are in the game, but maybe that's too much.

Again I like the style of the theme, but needs to be cleaned up a bit to really grab the interest, at least personally to me. I apologize for being an overly critical person, but when someone asks for criticism, I assume they want to hear more then "it looks great", when there are obvious flaws.

@kunglao32003 Do you mean you wish to boot straight into Mortal Kombat instead of EmulationStation? In that case, you can use the method described in this post: https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/5287/autostart-nes-rom-at-startup/2

You need to edit /opt/retropie/configs/all/autostart.sh and add at the top

    /opt/retropie/supplementary/runcommand/runcommand.sh 0 _SYS_ megadrive ~/RetroPie/roms/megadrive/NAME-OF-ROM

@greenhawk84 I'm mostly talking about editing the file itself, as long as you edit the metadata through the ES editor that's fine. Post the gamelist file on pastebin.com if you don't find the culprit , so we can have a look.

@alturis I think @johnny5126 means a power strip with one "master" socket and a number of "slave" sockets. If the device connected to the master socket draws power, the slave sockets will be powered by the strip automatically.

Nice job buddy! I have finished my large cab too and was thinking about doing a small upright like this. I like how you have the shape and it's not the same as every other generic bar top...looks original.

Do you have it booting straight into Pac man?

If you are set on using a big CRT. You gotta make the cabinet very strong. I'd suggest 3/4 MDF or Pine hardboard.
