@r4mbleon I thought for some reason that was part of the autostart script but maybe it was something we discussed and never implemented. it was a while ago that we did it.

For now yes i think its something that can (should) be added to the manual installation page and/or the FAQ page.

also in case you want to have both the splash and the desktop environment you can use plymouth though its a tad (lot) more involved than switching out a png

That appears to be the case. I re-flashed the image many times, but a new card did the trick. Funny that card had worked fine before.

      Thanks!

the screenshot is already in the command line. if you type

      sudo nano /etc/asound.conf <enter>

...you can edit it, and maybe fix it.

      Thanks for responding!

I didn't realize that es_log.txt was an error log (again, I'm very foolishly new at this), and I've located the problem! The font in question needed to be a "TrueType font," and any other type like an OpenFont is apparently cause for error, which I didn't know. I cleaned out the folder and reset all default properties, and now it works like a dream!

You guys are the best! Thanks!

I placed my pi in an old SNES case. I wanted to get it as close to a real SNES as possible, so I've wired the original power and reset switches to the GPIO along with a small fan and thermostat which I've set to kick on if things get too hot. With the solution in this post I've also wired an LED to the GPIO. I currently have the LED hooked to the TX pin, but that was because it was supposed to kick on and off without any extra code. Since I had to use the solution in this post I suppose I may free up the serial port for some future enhancements.

Currently I am using CanaKit 5V 2.5a power supply which you can pick up for fairly cheap on Amazon. You would be hard pressed to push the pi beyond 2.5a.

@dosch said in Back to ES from CLi:

I launched the RetroPie-Setup script from the CLI. In there I went to script>>Configuration / tools>>autostart and changed it back to Start EmulationStation at Boot.

I just did this again, but then used the option in the same menu to reboot the system, instead of doing a reboot from the CLI. Now it boots back into ES.

Thank you for your help @obsidianspider, but I guess it fixed itself ;-)

I have a dead snes console and the replica usb controllers.
      I'm doing this now.
Moving the /home directory to a usb stick for roms/art/configs and making the SD card OS read only so when my kids just kill the power they won't nuke the card.

it doesn't boot super fast but if you can't wait a few minutes to play a game.......
