I finally found the reason. Unfortunately I MOVED the ATARI 800 games from one installation to another. Though there were no roms present in the Atari800 the emulator did not show up in emulationstation.

It didn't seem to for me. I'll have to go back though to process and document what I do better (my memory is not what it once was...). But the way I remember it, I did the initial setup, when into Arcade, played Galaga, and neither the fire button nor the joystick worked. The Tankstick uses out-dated mappings for MAME (I guess they changed at some point). So I assumed that was the cause. I ended up remapping the Tankstick to just 'regular' letters on the keyboard, ran the controller setup, and still no-go. I had to go into the tab menu, and do a 'global' mapping there for it to work.

I've got some good areas to start looking.

@mitu Yep /home/pi/RetroPie/configs/mame-advmame/artwork does exist. I don't think I even created that folder it was created when I installed advmame I believe.

But aha! Yes indeed. Moving the artwork zip files to /opt/retropie/configs/mame-advmame/artwork seems to have done the trick!

It worked perfectly, thanks :) I asked that because when my SD data (mostly my gamelists) got corrupted and I erased each single gamelist to regenerate them the results got even worse hiding more games and erasing the default scraped data from the RetroPie collection

Hum, yeah looking at the code I won't understand enough how it's done to get something done by myself ^^

I would be curious did it swap the first time? I have never tried to change it back to the default after swapping. I wonder if you would need to run configure input again after resetting to defaults.

I haven't updated at all since March until now, so could be why it took so long. Emulators/Emulationstation/Retroarch etc. only took about 20 minutes to update.

It was just the kernel headers which took a very long time.

@pjft Thanks, it looks like nothing important was missing. After further investigation I found so far the only other thing that was installed was Zmap, and from what I read it scans the network traffic. All kinds of personal data could have been captured. I don't think it was running long enough to do any real damage.

@pjft yes, but once it freezes you can't do anything. I had it happen to me and once you get stuck on the same update line for a long time, nothing brings you back. You have to interrupt it before it freezes.

Recalbox has an implementation for this already you may have better luck there

Things work bit differently here on Pie/Pi than, say, on a PC. You don't start an emu.exe and then load roms. First of all you need to put your roms into appropriate directories. Read this: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Transferring-Roms/

Then reboot. Assuming you followed all the guides to the letter, you should now see names of the systems you transferred the roms for, with "X games available" underneath a name (that's on Emustation menu, where previously you only saw the Retropie thingy)
