SUCCESS - it looks like I've fixed it. The problem was that I hadn't commented out the unused buttons in the "Input device" buttons section of retroarch.cfg. Before I updated RetroArch didn't care, now it obviously does.

So I rolled back, updated and then only made that change to the retroarch.cfg. Everything else still works as before, because I didn't need to reset EmulationStation or MAME cfg files.

In the end it was a simple fix, thanks to everyone for all their feedback which helped me find the solution. Hopefully this thread helps someone else down the track.

@diegomaradona21 said in Pi4 performance on Mame with CRT shaders:

ok thanks. I meant 2d games actually (maybe plus tekken and soul blade / edge but not a must). Is there any list of games supported by mame in 2003? or maybe which specific version of mame that is?

each version of MAME will have a corresponding gamelist.xml or dat file which contains the list of games it supports (however nothing about performance). there are compatibility lists linked in the retropie MAME docs but they are fairly broken right now (soon to be retired), and don't contain pi4 information.

soul blade and tekken's playstation versions will run great.

      any cooling needed?

i use the flirc case which acts as a heatsink. never had any overheating issues, but it depends on your room temperature, humidity, ventilation, etc.

What I have to modify to have a better resolution?

Resolution is fixed, you can't change it. The only thing you can do is apply filters, which is exactly what your first screenshot is about : there is a blurry effect on it. It's probably retroarch's bilinear filtering, you can find it in retroarch menu : Setting > Video > Bilinear Filtering. Well, i think that blurry effect is horrible tbh, it feels like i need glasses, but i guess everyone has their own tastes.

Of course right after I posted this I discovered this:
      https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/25551/demo-mode-random-starting-of-games-for-es-retropie-menu?loggedin=true

This is a demo that loads random games from a specific folder and runs them for 60 seconds before switching to a new game. I think if a game seem appealing, you can just "insert a coin" or "press start" and start playing from there and after it is idle for 10 seconds, it returns to randomizing the games again. Kinda a neat script.

So hate to resurrect a two year old thread.. but my original lr-mame mod for mortal kombat plus seem too old now (5 years now) giving segmentation faults.

So I built new ones based on the newest build lr_mame 0.237. These were built on Ubuntu 22.04
but might work on pie's if anyone wants to try them..

mkp_mamearcade_libretro.so is for Mortal Kombat Plus
umk3p_mamearcade_libretro.so is for Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 Plus

Just copy them both into /opt/retropie/libretrocores/lr-mame

Be sure to adjust your configs/mame-libretro/ emulators.cfg like so:

      mkplus-mame = "/opt/retropie/emulators/retroarch/bin/retroarch -L /opt/retropie/libretrocores/lr-mame/mkp_mamearcade_libretro.so --config /opt/retropie/configs/mame-libretro/retroarch.cfg %ROM%" umk3plus-mame = "/opt/retropie/emulators/retroarch/bin/retroarch -L /opt/retropie/libretrocores/lr-mame/umk3p_mamearcade_libretro.so --config /opt/retropie/configs/mame-libretro/retroarch.cfg %ROM%"

Then set the emulators in run command.

They use the original rom zip names so change your plus roms to:

      mk.zip and umk3.zip

You'll be overwriting the original roms if you care..

      Download:

Next to mame2003, I can recommend its enhanced fork mame2003-plus and another arcade emulator called Final Burn Neo that is under ongoing development. But beware that every emulator needs its very own romset for the games to work, see Validating, Rebuilding, and Filtering Arcade ROMs.

This is a common problem for arcade emulation, so you maybe want to read and understand how that works first, from https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Arcade/.
If the ROM doesn't work, then you'll need to find the correct ROMset version for your emulator and get the ROM from that collection version.

If the issue appears only for arcade ROMs, then most likely your retroarch.cfg for that system is incorrect. Find the file \\retropie\configs\arcade\retroarch.cfg and replace its contents with

      # Settings made here will only override settings in the global retroarch.cfg if placed above the #include line input_remapping_directory = "/opt/retropie/configs/arcade/" #include "/opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg"

Try again to boot an arcade ROM and see if it works.
