I had the same idea, I am trying to run RetroPie on my Raspberry Pi with Debian 11 (I can't install RetroPie on Bullseye) on a Docker container, and I am using my iPad as a screen through Remote Desktop, and a Bluetooth controller (8Bitdo Zero 2), and I can use Emulationstation (my gamepad works fine there) but when I launch any game my controller doesn't work (I don't have a wired controller so I don't know if that's the problem). I've tried to change the retroarch controller configuration and changing it to "sdl2" only works one button... I don't know why. If you don't have any issues maybe I could try your Dockerfile because it might be my setup?

@Neo-Rio said in Retroarch build failure on PC:

currently trying to build retroarch fails with an error about "HEAD is now in branch 'retropie-v1.10.0' " and "Error running "git checkout retropie-v.1.12.0"
some patch branch on retropie isn't on github as expected to be or something's going on there.

More likely your local source copy is still present, because v1.10.0 fails to build with Ubuntu 22.04. Clean up the source folder before attempting another install.

@sleve_mcdichael I'm using a fork of retropie that doesn't allow this, well it allows it it just defaults every settings changed on reboot, so I need to do this via the hardware

@mitu Well, as always thanks for the help. I don't think it's underpowered given my new 3.5a CanaKit PSU made specifically for the Pi4 and it's a powered USB hub. But I can't rule out an unseated cable or something because now it's back to working correctly. I'm going to keep the USB HDD connected directly to the Pi, since if that isn't seen on boot, then it won't have access to the romsets which explains why they wouldn't show up, and if the USB cable to the hub got jostled then that would also explain why the gamepad wasn't detected.

@saku00 so I tried some Naomi 2 games on the standalone flycast on a pi4 2gb. Good news and bad.

They boot. But they're absolute slide shows. 4-7 FPS at best.

https://ibb.co/fvXsjwn - you can see the FPS counter in the corner. So I would say Naomi2 is a no for a pi4. Not surprising given they're basically PS2/GameCube/Xbox graphic games. Maybe a pi5 or 6 in a few years will be able to handle that.

@windg Not (yet). On the RPI (and probably other embedded) platforms we install a patched SDL2 library, but not on PC - where we use the distro's version of SDL2.
When the SDL2 library shipped by RetroPie will be upgraded we'll make sure to accomodate the changes done in upstream SDL2. For reference, see the discussions on this RetroPie issue.

      @JimmyFromTheBay

I think the smoothing is turned off by default, when a shader is in use.
That would be a plausible explanation .
Thought the comment of smoothing isn't that clear :

      # Smoothens picture with bilinear filtering. Should be disabled if using pixel shaders.

It suggests more that you have to force disabling it but I think it does it automatically.

Just wanted to confirm that building RetroPie on current Debian ‘testing’ using RetroArch’s 1.10.3 source works perfectly.

      Thanks!

      What kind of tricks?

datatype sizes aren't the same between those 2 archs, so you have to find some mean to pad them if you need to save them.

@sleve_mcdichael in this great Museum you have the choice of several points to jump in.
The latest savepoint is just one.
So how can we get to the point of choosing between multiple savepoints to jump in without using hotkeys?
I would try to write commandlines as stated above and add them to the gamelist.

You could use a bash script to copy the desired save state file to the required $SRAM_PATH.auto filename before launching with the savestate_auto_load setting enabled.

@JimmyFromTheBay You can also output that ls command there mentioned earlier. Just type emulationstation to relaunch (just type em and TAB should fill the rest, hopefully).

Do you really have 2500 custom override configs?

Rather more than that, it turns out :D

      rpicfgs.jpg

Obviously not all of those would be potentially affected by a Retroarch change, but goodness knows how many might be, and I never want to go through AspectRatioGate again. Even now, years later, I'm still finding games with the screen all wrong.

(I have CFGs for all sorts of reasons, in many cases it's as simple as a bezel but even those often need custom tweaks.)

And yeah, I have a backup but at 256GB it takes two days just to write the memory card. (And it's not really practical for a case like this, because if a new Retroarch broke everything the only suitable backup is a complete image file. What I actually have as a day-to-day backup are copies of the ROMS and CONFIGS folders, which can be updated in seconds, but that would be no use for a Retroarch meltdown. You can't save a 256GB image file every night.)

Anyway, that's my hangup to deal with, I'd really like the new feature but since it's basically only for two SNES ports that already run fine in MAME I'll have to weigh up the risk, and the terror of possibly having to go through the infinite pain of configuring WonderSwan games again. Thanks for the help :)
