@xeon yeh thats true, I hadnt thought of that,
disabling the controls may not be the best idea, nor turning off the monitor, I think the best way would be to diable the buttons, so you can move around the games list and watch video previews etc, then you have to insert a coin to continue.
the obvious choice here would be to use a pandoras box 4 which is meant for this kind of use, but if using the pi then the only other thing I can think of is to use the coinmech to start a timer, so you get 10 mins of play for 1 euro for example, no matter how many times you die, that could be a good idea.

you could lock the controls out in the game when the timer expires, then give them a length of time with audio warnings or whatnot to put more coins in and continue, and after a set time, if no further coins are inserted then reset back to the main menu with the buttons locked out.

It did the job but was so loud i got tired of it quick and set my clock speeds back to normal. I got the kit from amazon came with controllers and everything.

Raspbian stretch is not yet released officially afaik.

I find retro pi extremely friendly to use.
A few small niggles here and there but honestly the work done over the years is really good.
There are tons of other emulators on other systems that are pure brutes to get working never mind configure.

I've just downloaded the image to double check and the hash key matches that of the .gz file. The hash key you posted is from the extracted image which is why it's different (though I can verify still correct for the extracted image), if you do the hash check on the original gz file you will see it matches.

There is no problem with the image file you have. As @ortsac said try another SD card.

I did look to see if the resolution had somehow been changed. However, all the affected emulators were still set to their defaults. I believe my problem is that I always update the OS/Firmware alongside the RetroPie update and the most recent changes are reacting poorly.

Since I really don't want to downgrade anything, I'm just going to wait for the issues to be fixed upstream. In the meantime, the only emulator I can't trick into it's proper aspect ratio is Daphne and I can just adjust my television to squeeze the image to 4x3 when I want to use it.

I suspect a memory leak related to video previews. I just posted something similar I noticed after implementing video previews. While running 'top' logged in via ssh, with each video preview, the free memory went down a bit and stayed down, bottoming out around 80k. Even when left idle overnight, the memory did not free up. Only rebooting the pi freed up the memory.

I've got the first twist on Nickell Andrew (riking) running.
When I start the Joy Con driver via an SSL-Shel it works fine.
But I do not manage to start the driver automatically at system startup.

@pjft One can hope. My wife works in the film industry (prop painter), and her current project ends in about a month, so she'll be able to pick up a bit more of the house burden soon.

Sorry I couldn't reply sooner, I only just woke up.

Glad you got it sorted, if you haven't set everything up it's often easier just to re-flash the sd as you have.
Once you do get everything setup how you want it's a good idea to make a backup img of the SD card, that way if something major goes wrong in the future you just have to re-flash the card and you're up and running again.
