    Well my Raspberry Pi 3 is on it's way to me as we speak, and my old Gravis GamePad Pro USB is all I have lying around that isn't permanently needed elsewhere. And boy was it dusty! But it still works after plugging it into my Mac. Some solid gaming hardware IMO :-)

    I used to use it in Classic Mac OS and OS X from '99 through to the mid-2000's, with classic console emulators, before I began buying old console titles on my modern consoles, instead. Only I've gotten tired of buying my classic console game library over and over again with every new modern console generation and purchase. So I've returned to emulation, this time by buying a Raspberry Pi 3 to use with my living room TV as a dedicated emulation box (perhaps with BOINC running when I'm not playing as well).

    Now while my Macs can see this GamePad, I did often have to use a third party driver in order to be able to assign button functions (USB Overdrive in my case). Few apps did this on their own. All of which led me to my current doubts as to whether it would just work with RetroPie.

    I'm very pleased to hear from you - obsidianspider - that there's no problem. Cheers for that! :-)

    Oh yes - I answered with a Rom because he askeds for downloading Roms. The games you named are also good examples. I misunderstood something.

    @mediamogul
    Nice gameplay - thank you
    You can download RecalBox and extract the Roms folder there are also some homebrews located

    @stinkwinkerton said in Sidebar only overlays?:

    @Dochartaigh So, really, it would be cool if we could do an underlay instead of an overlay. Seems a lot simpler don't you think?

    You have to remember that overlays are biggest for MAME games I think, and if you remember back to the arcades there were many, well, quite literal "overlays" (over top of the screen) with graphics that overlap parts of the screen themselves (like asteroids, a sword, shield, little monster creatures, etc.). Even old CRT TV's had that little part of trim that commonly went around the edge of the tube (which is why we sometimes see weird stuff on the edges of old console game ROMS - since the very edge of the screen was covered up by plastic moulding way back when).

    This also lets them get creative with the "I'm actually looking through dirty plexiglass at the screen just like back in 1981" - which I personally don't get, but whatever.

    @herb_fargus said in Retropie on a 4K tv?:

    @Dochartaigh not to mention the pi can't even stream 4k so its kinda irrelevant at this point. (Personally I see 4k as just a gimmick. Give me my retro pixels!)

    Yup ;) and I've always been curious how RetroPie upscales all these games actually. They're really pretty decent at 1080p (especially with scanline shaders turned on). All the "true" hardcore retro guys (i.e. using actual consoles) buy like $400+ upscale boxes to get the best quality they can on a 1080p TV for example (well, when they're not pulling out their 250+ pound CRT TV's of course ;)

    @Ekstreme just commented on the youtube video in that page, maybe this is the only way to fight back against this - raise awareness.

    "For more info on the software loaded on this device, you should head over to the Retropie site where you can download it for free, https://retropie.org.uk/ also note that there are dubious legalities with purchasing hardware that has this software pre-loaded (With roms), as this totally ignores IP Laws and the terms of Retropie ;)"

    I bought and converted an old Saturn controller which I found pretty easy. I used the db9 driver and wired it to the gpio pins, but when researching the wiring loads of people had been converting them to USB.

    @enderandrew said in Favorite shader:

    I think you just need to add shader files.

    And it looks like libretro may have xBR shaders already, so RetroPie probably has them.

    https://github.com/libretro/common-shaders/tree/master/xbr

    If you're planning on using GLSL versions of those shaders on a Raspberry Pi I wouldn't get your hopes up. I had a quick look at a few of them and even the simplest look like they are doing too much processing for the Pi's GPU to handle at high frame rates.

    Hi guys, I've been mulling this one over myself - thought I'd add to the discussion here rather that start a new thread.

    My build's gone through a couple of iterations so I've actually 3 complete builds and nagging from the wife about them cluttering up the house is making me lean toward eBay.

    As @adamspc has mentioned, selling without the OS installed is the way to go to avoid any legal uncertainties. I've seen a lot of very basic or low quality builds for sale with OS and 1,000s of games included but I'm yet to see a decent, high quality build sold without OS - is there any demand for these? Anyone have any experience?

    Speaking of low quality builds, has anyone seen these guys: http://pixelarcades.co.uk/product-category/retro-games-consoles/ ? Looks to just be a console shell with usb controllers pulled through holes - very little modding going on here. Not even any mention of a safe shutdown circuit which should really be a must. Flagrant profiteering but at those prices I'd be very surprised if anyone is actually buying them.

    I was able to get one at midnight, and was tempted to put it on ebay, but instead, I have been playing it.

    they did make the manuals available, man Final Fanatasy 1 manual is huge!

    the system seems to work well, and I enjoyed playing with the CRT filter, it really felt like the old days then

    I don't know if it's that easy (unless the Pyra have an x86 processor)

    @naddel81 Updating can be a pain in the *** sometimes, the best way is to always install from image. If you back up your save games, cheat files, roms you should always be fine. I'm still using v4.0.2 it works perfectly fine for me, it runs everything properly so no need to update.

    I'm now using MGBA for GBA, I tried vba-next for a crash game and it unlocked achievements when I loaded the game but doesn't in MGBA.

    I'm using the default GB emulator on retropie

    @Assault I decided to go with a Gameboy Advance. I don't have easy access to a 3D printer, or I'd look at that route. Maybe a future build.
