You are definitely correct in that laws and regulations vary from location to location. There is also a lot of misinformation that is frequently spread.

For example, the 24 hour trial/backup rule in the USA is a hoax. It doesn't exist or cover you legally. It can be a civil offense if the holder of the IP decides to sue you for making unauthorized copies and therefore harming their profits. If you are selling those items, well, that's a different story as that can definitely be a criminal offense and not just a civil lawsuit.

So, basically there's no way to legally harvest and distribute owned IP without an agreement from the owner. There is no clause or rule that makes downloading a Mario ROM legally okay in the USA. All this was hashed out during the late 90's and early 00's during the Napster craze. However, Nintendo would have to decide that filing a lawsuit against you for damages was worth paying their IP lawyers to bring the case to court. They have much bigger fish to fry, but it is technically a possibility that they could sue you.

While a few individual citizens are probably not worth Nintendo's time and money, organizations and websites are not so obscure. IP holders (especially hyper defensive Nintendo) can and do send legal notices to websites. The Retropie project is very wise in keeping their collective noses clean.

There is also the humorous fact that Nintendo has downloaded ROMs from the internet to use for their virtual console systems. I read that one of the games on their store had a custom header on the ROM.

I suddenly remember my first tennis game: Pete Sampras tennis for the Game gear.

Had lots of fun with it.

I did give a try a few minutes ago. If I sit far away from my TV the shader looks okay but if I'm up close I can tell a difference. I don't know enough about the inner workings of shaders to say exactly why it looks worse up close, but it does. Hmmm.. I guess it's back to 1080p then as a nice shader is more important to me than marginally smoother menus.

@herb_fargus I agree with @AndersHP, if it's weekly, a quick mention about the MAME ROW game would be cool.

Also, I think it would be nice to mention the most interesting stuff discussed on the forums in the previous week.

Those are really nice. I constantly have to restrain myself from buying these because I know I wouldn't stop. Still, there's one I couldn't say no to. I've had him for a few years and I still get a kick out of seeing him on my fridge.

@hornsoverithaca Thanks ! You peaked my curiosity and I had to see what it was. SCAM !! lol. I scrolled down that page and saw this vid : https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/d3kmx7/when-the-worlds-most-famous-hacker-hacked-a-mcdonalds-restaurant-drive-in , made me chuckle ! Cheers !

Isn't that just ridiculous? Mike Kennedy put a video capture card into a clear plastic Atari Jaguar shell and called it a new console.

@pjft yes, i played it on Windows MAME for years, never had this issue.
On the Raspberry i only use AdvanceMame and did not try other Mame versions.
This game is not so important that i would change the emulator itself 😊.

It happens as soon as you confirm the third and last letter.
You enter the highscore on the Top of the screen and underneath you have got the actual top 5.
As soon as you confirm our entry, the three Letters are transfered to this list and become "XXX" 🤔

    I am using the Master/Parent rom "rainbow.zip".
Regarding your advise i just tested "rainbowe.zip", which is Rainbow Islands - Extra Version.
    No Problems! ALX stays ALX.

I know that there are a lot of entrys that are forbidden and get mainpulated that way in some arcade-machines like "SEX" "ASS" or "A.H"....but ALX???? 😊

I suggest a SNES style controller. It will easily handle both NES and SNES games. Three button Genesis/Mega Drive games also work fine. Six button Genesis games are a bit awkward, though.

My personal favorites are the Retrolink Dual link Capcom SNES controllers, the buffalo SNES clones, and the PS4 Hori Fighting commanders. The Hori is especially nice because of the six button layout and quality d pad, but they are more expensive. Be wary of the buffalo controllers as they are very nice, but they have ghost input issues (all three buffalos I own have that problem).

I do not like the 8bitdo wireless options personally. I have found them to be quite overpriced for what they do. They also have a significant problem with signal interference in my abode, but I have something like two dozen wireless devices running in the same apartment with 4 radios running at legal maximum signal. Your experience may vary.

Controllers for larger hands include the Hori Pokken controller, which is excellent but bulky. The xbox one controller honestly works pretty well and has a good pad, but it's large. The PS4 controller is expensive, but might be a good wireless option for small hands (I like the ps4 controller, but my wife has spider fingers so she likes the xbox).

Do not by the super cheap multi controller packs from Amazon. You would be better off playing Ninja Gaiden with a keyboard than using those things.

Nevermind, I got it working. You have to choose the fbalpha neocd option before loading. Also, it looks like it doesn't have chd support and no cd music..which was the point of using this. Thanks anyways. Back to lr-mess.

@clyde said in 4 way to 8 way adjustable restrictor plate:

By the way, I always wondered why those restrictor rings can't be moved more smoothly.

I think the answer to that is a result of the industry we are building from. Back in the day it was good to have joysticks configurable so they apply to more game types but they were expected to be used in one configuration in the cabinet

I think you have a point there. Even in today's retro gaming community, cabinets that are dedicated to specific controls are not uncommon.

I wouldn't be surprised (or mind that much) if someone started producing new plates based on the above modification. I briefly thought about it but decided that the other overhead items that I would need to put in place first over rode any profit I might make on such a small item.

Also, the existing plates are most likely patented, so you would have have to design a new plate from scratch, get permission from the patent holders, or risk being sued.

I spent a lot of time at Gameworks in Vegas as a kid and it was a pretty awesome arcade with 100s of games and a sweet deal for unlimited play by the hour. I think it was $10/hr, but were talking almost 20 years ago now...

A buddy of mine who still lives there told me a a while back that the original Gameworks closed, but i just looked it up and its now at town square still on las vegas boulevard, but at the 215 instead of downtown. It never made sense to me as a kid to have to walk past drunken debauchery to get to a freaking arcade, but at least its moved since.

Also i live an hour from Santa Cruz now and i dont recall at least on my last visit the arcade being anything special. Theres a couple old rather crappy games available, but if I were to do anything in that "arcade" it would be minigolf. Youll see it if you stop by and dont forget to ride the roller coaster!

@zerojay hiya, sorry to bring up such an old post, i am desperate for some help getting the .sh files in pc ports menu to play now the script has run its course fully (yes the metadata shows and everything is bang on the right place, yet running the games from menu kicks back to menu screen. You mention here about a part of the script capitalising the +dosbox.sh script which stops anything running - i think this is my problem, could you explain a fix for this pretty please with sugar on top? thanks bud.
