@chipsnblip I've also tried with my iPad charger (5.1 volts at 2100 mA) and the same issue occurs with exactly the same repro steps.

This morning I tried a different distro (batocera-linux -- derived from Recalbox). Everything works without any issues on my PiZero W (NES, SEGA GENESIS, SNES). The only difference in my setup with batocra-linux is that my controller needs to be on the "D" switch instead of the "X" (my controller was not working in "D" mode with RetroPie). Maybe that's another clue to investigate. For the time being, I'll stick with batocera-linux since It Just Works™.

I will still be monitoring this thread as I am curious if anybody else is able to reproduce. I can't be the only one having this issue.

@djinnocide Thank you for your help. I tried to do a reset of the configuration, and now it works. But I had to configure every emulator for the Fightstick, one by one to make them to work.
Maybe it can be the new version of RetroArch (I noticed there's a new graphical interface). In the older version the configuration it was automated for all the emulators (maybe also in this new version, in different way).
Now it need some work to configure the keys and find the correct mapping but it's ok.

@edmaul69 was doing that but no joy. In the end I just did a clean install and everything is now working... well except psx will not pick up the bios

@cookingissues the keyboard IS a retropad, but that's not your problem.

as i said, i think your problem is that you deleted all the retroarch.cfgs. you can probably restore them by reinstalling retroarch and mame2003 and then running emulationstation's input configuration again.

@darksavior isn't there an option that works for all emulators, even non-Libretro ones?

What I am looking for is this

emulationstation displays in 1080p as soon as I launch any game, the screen mode and TV should switch to 720p and the emulator (even non-libreto) should display in 720p. The TV should show a mode switch to 720p hdmi mode. after quitting the emulator, the TV output switches back to 1080p and ES is displayed in 1080p again. I think the runmode script makes this possible, but currently I have to set it separately for each emulator.

I think there's a global option somewhere to set it for all emulators, but maybe I remembered it wrong.

But if the scaling to 1080p does really use no resources then maybe it is unnecessary to set this like I intend.

Reviving this, because I just found out that you can have the hotkey act as a dedicated pausekey if in Retroarch you assign it to the same button press.

In my situation, my middle front button on my arcade is mapped to keyboard "o".
In Retroarch I assigned both my hotkey and my toggle pause key to "o", and this means that games pauses when I press it, but it still serves as a hotkey, so the other hotkey commands works as well (though the game pauses).

Not sure if this will work as an exit button (the game will then exit when you hotkey), but with pause it does!

Ask the author of Motion Blue for support if you can't get it to work. Only the official Retropie image is supported here.

What are the two images? I saw in your other post about this issue that you were using Motion Blue v5. Are you saying that the trackball works with the default Retropie image from this site?

Stephen Selph's scraper is also not returning any artwork. Looks like a problem with the thegamesdb.net API:
