  • Can I Bypass Any Need for a Hotkey?

My arcade cabinet (from Recroommasters) has an Emulator Edition Plus controller as well, and I learned a few other tips in trying to remove my defined Hotkey from Retroarch so I thought I'd add them to this post.

First, it helps tremendously to have the keyboard mappings for the controller:
    Keyboard.jpg

Most of the games in my setup use 3 buttons max, so I worked to avoid the 3 'player one' buttons to the left of the trackball conflicting with Retroarch definitions that tend to require a hotkey. I may do a little more tweaking, but these are the main changes I made within the 'default' retroarch.cfg file (located at /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg):

    input_toggle_fast_forward = "nul" # input_exit_emulator = "num1" input_reset = "v" input_menu_toggle = "c" input_grab_mouse_toggle = "j" input_state_slot_increase = "nul" input_state_slot_decrease = "nul" input_enable_hotkey = "nul"

    A few tips and explanations:

There are multiple copies of retroarch.cfg, especially in all of the different emulator-specific folders. But, I also found a copy in /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch/retroarch.cfg. I read a few posts in this forum indicating this shouldn't exist / isn't needed - I thought it was interfering with implementing the above changes, so I renamed it. It didn't make a difference (see #2 below), but it also didn't seem to regress anything, either. Initially, I couldn't get the 'fast forward' option to not be mapped to the 'space' key, which is right-most of the 3 'player 1' buttons. The line for this option was commented out in the 'default' retroarch.cfg file, but I found the copy mentioned in #1 above (/opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch/retroarch.cfg) had the line un-commented. However, even renaming this copy didn't help...I had to actually un-comment out the line in the 'default' retroarch.cfg file and then change the value to what I wanted ("nul" - I can't imagine wanting to fast-forward the action in a game!). I find the 'grab mouse toggle' mapping very helpful, because any game using the spinner or trackball can run into a problem with the OS mouse pointer hitting the boundary of the screen 'underneath', which prevents the game pointer from moving as well. This has been reported in the Retroarch forums, and there is a fix available that should help, but it isn't yet available in the latest version of Retropie (4.7.1, which has Retroarch 1.8.8 and the fix was released afterward). Until it is included in an upcoming release of Retropie, I need to press the 'grab mouse toggle' key to avoid problems.

@tpr not in mame2003, however mame2003-plus just added official support for the middle mouse click. 😎😃 You can update or install it from source to get the new input.

Thank you very much! I had the same problem (installed RetroPie on top of Xubuntu 18.04 LTS 32 bit on top of an old Asus EEE PC. Took me some time but finally RP installed fine.

However, ES gave me the white screen. Based on your advice I found out it was caused by the same issue, the GPU not supporting OpenGL 2.

After following up your advice, ES starts just fine. As such this EEE system has a new life: a retro gaming station! Awesome!!!!

The ScreenScraper.fr source site has some problems and they're offline at the moment - that's why you get errors during scraping. Use another scraping source or wait for the site to return.

I get the desire for a "turn key solution", but it really is easy and very low cost to do this yourself. Granted the legality of ROMs is an issue I won't get into, but learning Linux and how to tweak the files to get things the way you want them is really satisfying. You can do all kinds of cool stuff with RetroPie, EmulationStation, and Retroarch.

@jiryn said in Sound Issues with System 32 Games in MAME2003, 2010 and 2016 (Jurassic Park):

    @barbudreadmon
Interesting, and I never use the controllers in bluetooth mood, they are always hard wired to the console with USBC
Never tried overclocking, just use it stock for the most part.

More interested in the best em ups anyways, but Jurassic Park was always a fav.

The Sega system 32 graphical rewrite circa MAME97-98 will always cause performance issues on lesser devices,
as @barbudreadmon suggested quite often this can cause skipping and or other sound issues. MAME2003
is one of the fastest cores and apart from that it uses the faster although slightly more imperfect system 32
video code from before the big rewrite i mentioned above.

So it might be your best bet to get the best performance on your device of choice and may sort your sound problems
when playing Jurassic Park it's worth a try at least.

@buzz is it possible to add the option in the retropie-setup script when installing any emulator to create also a script in the ports or emulators folder that runs directly the emulator it self ???
instead to work only by running a rom/game.
And create an extra menu in Emulationstation called stand-alone Emulators for example
for advanced users like me,i think is good to exist an option like this in Retropie.

    thanks

To use a Switch controller wired, you have to install both of its drivers first:
    https://joaorb64.github.io/2020/04/08/using-nintendo-switch-controllers-on-linux.html
After this, you must press ZL and ZR to pair it everytime. Working fine on a RPi3B+.

You purposely want to build a cab that can not play most games? 😯
Anyways you'll have to check the keys n the mame menu, i think by default you access that by holding start. you can also open it from the retroarch menu, you can not see it from within emulationstation like you're trying to do on the picture.
    Start the game first.

  • How to configure Arcade Button connected to GPIO

What you're configuring is actually a keyboard - mapping GPIO pins to keys - so you can set the P2 inputs to whatever you want (as long as it's not conflicting with P1). The real configuration has to be done in the emulator and in EmulationStation you can have only one of the players configured to navigate and launch games.
I think there are a few arcade games that require P2 Coin input, so having just one coin input might pose some problem for those games.

See the Keyboard controllers doc page for additional details.

There are separate drivers that can interpret the GPIO input and simulate 2 gamepads - like mk_arcade_joystick. They require either a specific wiring schema or manually configuring the mapping with driver options.

You can add shortcuts to your gamelist that will start with an empty file, thus disabling the auto-loading. Some emulators already have a similar shortcut (+Start Amiberry, +Start Fuse), you can replicate the setup for others.

If you prefer working from the desktop, then you can leave RetroPie alone and just install the emulators manually on a Raspbian + Desktop image.
