    I'd say that it's most likely broken and became read-only, thus the inability to erase the partition table and create a new one (re-partition).

    @Lolonois Yes, I see it with "amixer". I never used this command. I will remember to check that everytime.

    Now i'm working on the fully broken system :

    I removed pulseaudio and pipewire. Now I can select vc4-hdmi-0 or vc4-hdmi-1 in Retropie audio menu and in raspi-config menu.

    here is the amixer output :

    Simple mixer control 'PCM',0 Capabilities: pvolume Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right Limits: Playback 0 - 255 Mono: Front Left: Playback 255 [100%] [0.00dB] Front Right: Playback 255 [100%] [0.00dB] Simple mixer control 'HDMI',0 Capabilities: pvolume pswitch Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right Limits: Playback 0 - 255 Mono: Front Left: Playback 255 [100%] [0.00dB] [on] Front Right: Playback 255 [100%] [0.00dB] [on]

    Sound still not working, with hdmi-0 or hdmi-1 and PCM or HDMI in ES menu. sliders working but no sound. This time "MASTER" is stuck at 0%. I understand why now.

    When I go in audio Retropie-setup Menu I can see an error during one second :

    lvl0: Audio manager error: unable to open SDL audio : Alsa Couldn't open audio device: Device or ressource busy.

    After there is the two hdmi choices and the working "Mixer - adjust output volume" Option.
    I try to "Reset to default", reboot, nothing changes.

    In raspi-config, 6-Advanced Options, A7-Audio Config, there is "No audio systems installed".

    vc4-hdmi-0 and vc4-hdmi-1 are still availlable in 1-System Options, S2 Audio.

    I updated SDL1 and SDL2 dependency packages in RetroPie Setup. Nothing changes.

    @mitu I figured out why I ended up using Valerino's repository. I was trying to install gsplus to get a working emulator for the Apple IIgs. Are there any other emulators I could use (either from Retro-Pie Setup or Retro-Pie Extras) that could be installed as a replacement?

    I backed up the RetroPie-Setup folder and deleted it. I tried re-installing the necessary cores packages to make it re-appear. At that point, I was able to update the RetroPie-Setup script to 4.8.9. I noticed that a few of my Spear of Destiny Files (Episodes 2 and 3) were missing, so I grabbed the GOG version of the game and compared the checksums again. After I added the appropriate files to the wolf3d folder, I tried reinstalling WolfSDL and it booted each of them up correctly.

    Thanks for your suggestions and patience guys.

    @mitu said in Turning the screen off (again) and screensaver problems.:

    You can log off the console user (the one on the tty1) and the auto-login will kick in and start EmulationStation again. An ugly workaround, to say the least.

    I'd preffer not to do that, I was trying out some chatgpt suggestions and instead of logging in and starting ES, I was met with log-in screen for virtual terminal 0, and tty1 wasn't starting at all.
    I had to "sudo apt remove --purge kmscon" to make it work again (after hour or two of debugging, I already wanted to reinstall everything) It seems that kmscon was hijacking the getty (I never heard of getty nor kmscon before so it was like an actual study doing it)

    ... well, I asked chatgpt about the "starting as NOT superuser problem", I tried out the first suggestion it gave and it actually works first try!

    su - pi -c "setsid emulationstation < /dev/tty1 > /dev/tty1 2>&1 &"

    I actually understand the linux stuff more now as this needs both "< /dev/tty1" and "> /dev tty1" (it didn't occur to me that you can do both!). It also needs setsid before running, it needs that weird "2>&1" in the end ... that's allegedly also doing something... ok... as long as it works! :D

    Thanks for the help guys, I appreciate it a lot!

    @sleve_mcdichael said in Doom 2 not showing under Ports:

    If you're gonna keep individual sub-folders for each game (for separate saves & settings) then you need to add the launch script manually as detailed in:

    If you're using DSDA-Doom this is not necessary, since it creates separate configuration and saves folders depending on the PWAD and IWAD used.

    I am using an imager, and the recommended OS for PI 5 is Debian BookWorm with Pi Desktop 2024-11-19

    Yes, you can install it on Bookworm - the suport is still beta but it should mostly work.

    After some trial and error with overscan settings I've made a little progress. Using overscan_scale=1 carries the changes through to MAME, so that's been helpful.

    Using the following overscan settings allows me to move the image at the top of the screen down (this would be the right side in landscape mode), but any value for overscan_left (bottom of my screen) pushes the image up - even if I use a negative value! So that just squashes the image more. Leaving overscan_left at 0 results in least squashing, but doesn't move the image down, so I've still got that black border at the bottom of the image, and it's still a bit squashed.

    overscan_left=0
    overscan_right=80
    #overscan_top=16
    #overscan_bottom=16
    overscan_scale=1

    Any more suggestions greatly appreciated!

    EDIT: I've found a solution - there are options in the retroarch gui to move the image around the screen, but you have to select window mode rather than full screen, and use a custom aspect ratio. These options are hidden if you're in full screen mode which is why I didn't see them earlier!

    Do I have to manually do this for every emulator?

    Yes, the configuration needs to be done for each emulator, the first time you start a game with it.

    @JimmyFromTheBay I agree. The last version of Retropie works on Pi5 almosts as good as on Pi4. There are no risk do an official release for Pi5.

    Maybe if one was released quickly, more users could have helped to solve basic problems, like the 0% soundbar which still exists today without a solution exclusively on Retropie.

    Anyway, all pi are "experimentals", anytime. We are always experimentating something on Pi2, Pi3, Pi4 as on Pi5 in 2025.

    But it's ok, I go back to talk with myself on my topic.

    Please add more info: https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first

    Also, does the controller have any switch that changes modes? If so, set it to 'X' (x-input) and try again.

    @MCG_1983 There's is beta support for the PI5 in RetroPie-Setup, though without an official image release.
