@v3rd1ct As you go through the wiki and look at controllers, one of the challenges you might find is that there is no wiki for keyboards. It's not really an oversight--several of us here have the combined details and first-hand experience to probably write one. In fact, I will probably take on the task at some point, but in the mean time, here is a good thread about it. Having a keyboard controller is great, especially if you plan to have a lot of buttons. My four-player setup would be a lot easier if I had just focused on a 2-player design, but IPAC is a good solution.

The other thing that will add to the complexity is that with your focus on fighter games, you might find that FBA emulates these better than MAME. So, suddenly you find yourself trying to manage multiple arcade emulators. Maybe you even decide to use the ARCADE folder for your ROMs to simplify the interface. Managing controls over various emulators is part of the challenge, but also part of the fun. It can be done, so hang in there.

I don't often say it out loud to people, but I have to admit that one of my hobbies is "configuring a DIY retro-gaming system". For me, it is never finished, and with new versions of Emulation Station on the horizon, new theme capabilities, updates to emulators, new Pi hardware. . . there is no end in sight, and I love it! But, I still need to write that keyboard controller wiki page.

I also wanted 4player functionality but I didn't want to mount 4 joysticks. So I made a 2 joystick machine and installed 2 USB inputs in the front of the cabinet for two others to play via a USB controller like a PS4 controller.

However your idea of 4 joysticks would be cool too. It depends if you want ball or batt style joysticks. For ball, the senwas are good. For batt, the happ.

@dankcushions said in MAME2003, Rgui vs Tab:

when you press tab, where are those control configurations stored?

      https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/lr-mame2003#mame-menu

They appear to be tied to the retropad mapping so how do they work with the Rgui bindings?

basically all libretro emulators only see the retropad abstraction. so regardless of what controller you use, the emulator will only see 'Retropad A button', 'Retropad B button', etc. if you rebind something using the TAB key, what you are saying is 'Button 1' in mame is changed from 'Retropad A button' to 'Retropad B button', etc.

Perfect, thanks! I missed this in the Wiki.

@rbaker I think he's saying the link doesn't provide an answer to his question. Which is true. It provides an answer on how to get help to get an answer to his question.

But again if he'd read the documentation on it I don't believe he would need to ask.

Yea I was wracking my brain on it. I didn't DO anything to make it stop working. The only thing I can think of is maybe I somehow corrupted the settings when I was trying to get the Atari800 emulator working. Either that, or the Duke Nukem 3D port (which is awesome that it runs, but I can't get the mouse/keyboard combo to work right with it. It's either too sensitive or not enough). By replacing the new configs with working old ones, I think it just fixed itself, although erasing and recreate the various config files might have had something to do with it to.

You need to exit gpsp from the menu with "Exit gpSP" after configuring controls, not by pressing exit etc.

This is of course documented in the wiki. https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/game-boy-advance#gpsp

@boie said in How can I setup 2 player controls for emulators other than Mame. Specifically for the "arcade" set of emulators.:

After doing more reasurch I found that my problem is that I need to configure my second player for PiFBA.

This is true and once again, if you read the guide it will tell you how and with what file. Please do not ask any further questions until you have read https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first. It is obvious that you have ignored it despite it being printed at the top of the page and despite agreeing to it when you signed up.
