@Weatherby said in Pi4 default resolution won't work:

The Pi3 runs smoothly at 4k though, it just gets hot as hell.

Pi3 doesn't support 4k, it's probably choosing 1080p as the best display resolution.

I am not sure what the deal is with the audio not working on the HDMI1 port

That's the default. You can switch it from the Audio menu.

@warchant RetroPie on the RPI is designed to run from the console. Not under X. Don't use xinit.

Addendum: You could (re-)compress the uncompressed .cue and .bin pairs (or multiples) to the CHD format with will often shrink them up to around 50% of their former size and put them into just one file you can drop into your roms/psx directory. In my experience, those CHDs will run in 80-90% of the cases.

This one-liner will do that with all cue files and their corresponding bin files in the current directory.

      for i in *.cue; do chdman createcd -i "$i" -o "${i%%.*}.chd"; done

Important: This will cut off the filenames after the first dot for the output CHD filenames. Remove one % from "${i%%.*}.chd to cut only the last extension for compatibility with filenames with multiple dots.

Beware though that this will only work with single-disk games. For storing multiple disks in one container you'll need the PBP format, which is also supported by Retropie's PSX emulators.

That said, be sure to check https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Playstation-1/ to see which emulators support CHD if you want to go that road.

      here is my error

Yeah, as i said, the "drive is empty" message meant it was unable to read your dump for some reason :).
It might be worth mentioning, i backported dump format support from kronos to yabause last year, which means it supports chd, cue/bin in a zip, and cue with multiple bins

@VictimRLSH I figured there wasn’t much of a gain between the two. I only went with the 8g since I was jumping from a raspberry pi 3b and figured I may as well spend a little extra and have more ram. I plan to use a few different cards to experiment a bit. This wasn’t meant to replace my custom Ryzen desktop build, this is more for fun. Already setup a desktop environment last night. I’m interested in overclocking this to see how it handles different applications. I already know the overclock will definitely help in emulating Dreamcast and 64.

The safest option would be be to install the latest Raspberry Pi OS Lite - which should have the USB boot supporting firmware on the/boot partition - on the USB disk, then perform a Manual install of RetroPie. The EEPROM bootloader is already updated, so USB boot should work.

@mitu said in RetroPie 4.6 on Pie 4: Using 8bitDo Bluetooth controllers all game hang.:

It's a known issue with certain 8bitdo controllers when configured in XInput mode - RetroArch takes a long time to start. Try configuring the controller(s) to start in 'Switch' mode instead of PC/Xinput mode.

You are right on. I tried one of the controllers in Switch mode, and the other in Android mode and it works very well. Thanks. I looked around and couldn't find the error.

@tyon2006 said in Using HD LCD with Retropie and RPi4:

Makes sense. Any thoughts on retroarch/emulation station supporting these super high resolutions?

If you add a custom hdmi_mode and it's recognized by the Pi4, it should be used automatically.

On the Pi3, I couldnt even get it to boot up all the way

That's normal, since the Pi3 didn't support these large resolutions.

@OldSchool Did you research if this is actually necessary? I used my 250 GB Samsung EVO 840 connected with an SATA-to-USB adapter to one of the USB2 ports of my Pi 3B (without +) for over two years without any problems, and now its connected to my new Pi 4B Rev 1.2 via USB3 for a month, again without any issues.

What problems exactly do you expect and where did you learn about them?

edit: I should mention that I also had/have a PacDrive LED controller for my 18 illuminated buttons and a wireless Mayflash Wii-U Pro gamepad adapter connected to the USB ports of both of my Pis, all of them without external power. The only somewhat funny "issue" I noticed is that the buttons flicker ever so slightly when the ssd is being accessed. 😊

That's very unfortunate. 😔 I was hoping myself to get rid of my hardware HDMI splitter now that the Pi 4 has two outputs.

as others have said, we do not support third party images, and these preloaded systems break licenses and our hearts: https://retropie.org.uk/about/legal/

on a more practical level, retropie isn't a consume product so no matter how much a seller tries to sell it as one, it WILL need manual configuration at some point, and it WILL go wrong. if manual configuration is too much work for you (totally fair enough!) in encourage you to try the various official emulator boxes. the nes/snes classics are great, and the ps1 classic is flawed, but essentially the same emulator as retropie ships with anyway.

i'm locking this post as there's not much more to be said. if you want to try the official way we are here to help!
