I GOT IT WORKING!!!

Good Grief.....in the end I used the PS3 driver and what made ti work was, just after registering the device a window pops up saying you can now unplug your cable.

At this point, I unplugged and paired the controller and THEN with the keyboard moved back to the main menu to configure it.

Trying to pair the device at ANY other point during the process and it doesnt like it.

Have rebooted and the device still conect and works so it seems stable :D

@emrecaglar if you need any help to set it up please let me know - I went through some of problems with this combo (it's a bit more problematic than RetroPie for Pi :)).
For sure you can change priviliges for config files as you won't be able to save any config in RetroArch:

sudo chmod -R 777 /opt/retropie/configs/

Please just be mindful that this way you give access to this files and folders to EVERYONE which means that if someone connects to your computer then it has full access to all files and folders in this path.
In my case it does not matter as I don't have constant network access to this device (it sits in arcade cab with no lan/wifi) so not much of a deal for me :)

I see you're running the ROM from an external disc, did you mount this manually or using the automated method ?

That is strange! Because, even if ES configure Input Menu is telling you it hasn't detected a gamepad, pressing a "keyboard" key should get you through the configuration of the controls for player 1 (same as with only a real keyboard connected)! Have you tried pressing a button (mapped as keyboard key), or does the message that no gamepad was found had mislead you to assume that a keyboard cannot be configured via the UI? Going through that should give you a valid retroarch.cfg (as said for player 1), to add player 2 controls you still have to edit the file.

@pscotto1234 Unless you installed the ps3controller driver, which disables the OS Bluetooth stack, there shouldn't be any issues.
You might have to re-pair the controller and - recommended - re-configure it in EmulationStation after installing the driver, but that's all.

I like the version of Retroarch that comes with 4.5.1 since I am more familiar with it, so I would rather not recompile from the source unless there is a way to preserve my current version???

The recent versions of RetroArch don't have the sorting patch, it's not needed anymore.

Is there way to prohibit the player 2 controller from being able to operate emulation station (e.g not work the cursor to pick games)? That way I could know which controller is player 1 or player 2 very quickly.

That's going to work only if you don't configure the gamepad in EmulationStation.

@Clyde & @zwooky my .bat-fu times are long past and I've never touched the powershell, but if it is just for the conversion on a desktop pc, and a *nix VM ain't at hand: why not use a live system from usb with a partition for some persistence storage (to keep installs/settings/changes to the system)? I on my behalve, if not using an external HDD with an Ubuntu Install on it (Bootloader placed on that HDD), am using The Universal USB Installer to setup a stick for such tasks...

You can launch discs for supported cores by starting any rom for the system in question first (which avoids having you to load up a core first before launching a disc) and then selecting "load disc" from the retroarch menu.

You're right, defining a per-system folder for the savefiles is a good idea, but it doesn't help with the save states, which is indeed a retroarch problem.

This feature is not supported, ES doesn't do any XML pre-processing, it just reads the node value as is.

Try updating the lr-hatari emulator from source, I think 2 player support hasn't been added until recently.
