Thank you for being so patient with me. The problem is solved now. If I believed in gods, I would call you a retropie god. I guess Global Moderator will have to do.

"that's why I asked for a complete log (including ES exiting)." I was giving you what ES was producing.

I launched ES from terminal with the command emulationstation --debug

I went and scraped the snes ROMS - data and images were retrieved.

Exited ES and restarted it with just the emulationstation command

copied the es_log.txt file to a rom folder - so I could transfer it to my PC

    How I fixed the problem:

Moved the SNES ROM's to a folder called SNESBAK

    There was no /snes/gamelist.xml file

I found a bucket load of image files in /home/pi/.emulationstation/downloaded_images/snes/ I deleted them all

    I rebooted retropie

Copied the snes ROMs from the SNESBAK folder to the snes folder

    restarted ES

Tried scraping 10 of the snes ROMS and was succesful

Restarted ES and the 10 ROM's data and images were saved.

    Deleted SNESBAK and ROMS

@tusabez Nevermind. Apparently I changed the layout for Retroarch a while back which made them not playable. I got them running now. Thanks though!

    Hi,

After looking at the runcommand log, I didn't see anything weird, especially since the slowness tended to before runcommand had started.

I reinstalled Alexander Shalin's rclone script for cloud syncs and the problem is sorted.

Thanks for being there ready to help 😀

@aaronc75 Could you provide more information about how you have setup Skyscraper? That path to the media looks strange. It seems you have relative paths turned on, but I don't understand why it says ./downloaded_images as the media path.

What are the permissions of the ./downloaded_images folder itself?

Righto, here's the solution for everyone who wants to let RetroPie handle NTSC/ NTSC progressive modes but then switch to the PAL60 equivalent:
    Put this into runcommand-onstart.sh:

    (sleep 15 && sudo /home/pi/tweakvec/tweakvec.py --preset PAL60) &

If it doesn't work for your Pi, try sleeping a bit longer. On my Pi3, 15 seconds seems like the sweet spot.

@tomcat91fr said in Can't mount NAS drive for Roms:

Main mistake : I was working from my PC via a Telnet connection, and was editing my file autostart.sh with a windows editor ! Big mistake !!

You can access the config folder via file shares (\\retropie\config), you don't necessarily need the SSH (Telnet is not available on the Pi) connection. Either way, it's strange because nowadays Notepad (default Windows editor) supports Unix line endings.

Either way, good you have this solved - when in doubt, use Notepad++ or edit directly on the Pi, using nano.

@emulatre71 Oddly it has never happened before, but now again on a brand new install tonight. Tried the same trick and it worked there as well.

I am unable to deselect "en_GB.UTF-8 UTF-8" or select "en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8" When I attempt to select

    en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8" I can not place a * in the [ ]. I am unable to remove the * from the "[ ] en_GB.UTF-8 UTF-8" line. I leave the cursor on "[ ] en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8"

how are you selecting/deselecting? on a keyboard it's the space bar, and then you need to use the tab key to select 'OK' (and then enter to use it).

@greenhawk84 said in How often do you fresh build?:

Hello, just curious about something I have never done until I have to with a new Pi model or mandatory change, which is start over again with a fresh install. How often do you do this?

Like others here, I also don't do it without good reason, e.g. when I switched from my Pi 3b to my new Pi 4 last spring. I also have customised my installation pretty much, so a new installation would require a good amount of re-configuration, even if most configurations can just be copied over from the old system.

I often wonder if so many updates through a package update eventually cause regressions.

RetroPie is built on Linux which in my long lasting experience doesn't "litter" the system over time as much as Windows does. You usually don't have to clean up or re-install a standard Linux system at all. As far as I can tell as a mere (power) user, RetroPie itself is also pretty neatly designed in the same way, so you shouldn't fear any regressions by just updating it via the RetroPie setup.

All that said, one important thing for any system is to back it up on a regular basis. Apart from failed updates or operating errors, every hardware can break any day for a number of reasons. See the Docs about Making a Backup.

    Hi,

    Thanks for your prompt reply.
Sorry for not having fully specified my config.
When writing this very post, I was going through the template for it using the link you provided and came across the question 'usb devices connect'. At this point I thought of trying starting Amiberry without having my 2 Xbox (original) controllers connected, which are in turn connected to my USB hub.
And guess what...this did the trick! Amiberry now starts fine. I'm able to reproduce the issue so this is really the problem. Disconnecting either one of the 2 controllers will also work. But 2 at the same time won't work. I'm not having any other issues with both connected at the same time. I have a 5A PSU and never seen the rainbow logo with this setup except immediately after power on (bios screen).

I hope this may help anyone else stumbling upon this in the future.

@pmdci you have to open the Retroarch menu when you are running a game. Go to Quick Menu, Options, then Controls. Set the player 1 to Atari joystick (or something similar to that). That will allow you to use the start key on your controller.

Same for the Atari 800 if you are running that portion of the emulator.

Connect it in Xinput or Switch mode, re-configure it in EmulationStation, and see if the issue persist.

    @jamrom2 Thanks for confirming this.

@richard-baker Before doing @jamrom2's last point ("Go back to your PC …"), you'll have to enable SSH in RetroPie. See the Docs for instructions, I recommend "(Option 2) From the RetroPie menu".

@george-spiggott Here is a guy that just installed the latest dolphin with vulkan support and says Wii Mario Kart is getting 17 to 19 fps.

    https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/30339/wii-emulation-performance-using-vulkan-on-pi4?_=1620328997907

And he's only clocked at 1750 and 600. I don't have time to confirm but if that is true that's a very nice performance increase in only a couple months.
