      Alright, so I double checked photoshop and both layers are at 100% opacity with a Normal blend mode @edmaul69. The opacity is definitly set to 1.0 in the retroarch settings and yes, I do have a viewport set to the size of the transparent area of the overlay @AndrewH:

      video_fullscreen_x = 1920
      video_fullscreen_y = 1080
      custom_viewport_width = 1440
      custom_viewport_height = 1080
      custom_viewport_x = 240
      custom_viewport_y = 0
      aspect_ratio_index = 22
      input_overlay = "/opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch/overlay/tv-old/Nintendo.cfg"
      input_overlay_enable = true
      input_overlay_opacity = 1.000000
      input_overlay_scale = 1.000000
      video_smooth = "true"
      video_scale_integer = "false"
      video_shader_enable = "false"
      video_font_size = "16"
      video_message_pos_x = 0.17
      video_message_pos_y = 0.06

      @edmaul69, I'll try using two overlays but I have a feeling I'll either get none or it'll display only the first one that appears in the cfg file.

      @youxia said in Using "super resolutions" with a crt - any way to correct the emulationstation aspect ratio?:

      Super resolutions are used for GPIO and HDMI outputs, composite needs different configs.

      Ya I know, I got my composite setup perfect, but the only way to get rid of the rainbow moire on dithered textures was to use a shader made specifically for outputting over the pi’s comp plug, doesn’t add much blur, but it’s def not perfect. Was hoping somebody figured out how to hack this res into the yellow plug, haha. Wishful thinking.

      CRT's are definitely worth checking out. I've spent $25 total for the thriftstore Trinitron and composite cables for the pi. Right now, it's in the parlor room "for the holidays" (AKA I don't want to wrestle it up the stairs just yet!)

      @yuke Just make a backup of your config.txt file before changing anything. You need to get your Hdmi timings right before changing anything in the service menu.

      Now that your Hdmi timings are as best as you can get them then go over to overscan settings.

      We'll worry about the service menu later.

      This is taken from the Video timings script readme file.

      *Video timings script
      *Version - 2.0

      hdmi_timings=320 1 20 20 44 240 1 6 7 10 0 0 0 60 0 6400000 1

      -Use ARROW keys to position screen
      -Press Q to toggle test image
      -Press I to input timings
      -Press L to load timings from timings_load.txt
      -Press B to load timings from boot/config.txt
      -Press S to save timings to timings_save.txt
      -Press C to save timings to boot/config.txt
      -Press D to display current timings
      -Press F to calculate frequencies
      -Press SPACE or ENTER to reset timings
      -Press M to display this menu
      -Press X to exit to shell

      Program first reads and displays hdmi_timings from /boot/config.txt

      -Arrow keys | shift the screen left/right/up/down

      -Q | displays a 320x240 test PNG image to visually aid in centering the screen (defined by $TEST_IMAGE variable)

      -I | allows user to manually input and generate custom hdmi_timings

      -L | loads timings from 'timings_load.txt' (defined by $LOAD_FILE variable)

      -B | loads timings from 'boot/config.txt' (defined by $BOOT_CONFIG variable)

      -S | saves and parses timings to 'timings_save.txt' (defined by $SAVE_FILE variable) and also saves and replaces timings to 'timings_load.txt'

      -C | saves timings to 'boot/config.txt'

      -D | displays current timings

      -F | calculates and displays horizontal scan rate and vertical refresh rate frequencies

      -SPACE or ENTER | resets timings (defined by $SAFE_TIMINGS variable)

      -M | clears the screen and displays the main menu

      -X | aborts the program and exits to shell

      Edit: It's important that you center the image as perfect as you.

      Edit 2: Read here here for an explanation about what each hdmi_timings settings mean.

      Maybe @maxriptide @Dochartaigh can help out?

      @morpie For what it's worth, I have a cocktail style cabinet and play most vertical games rotated by Retroarch (my setup has a three-sided control panel) and performance is great on those games. Actually, vertical orientation works great in other emulators as well. For example, Tempest in AdvanceMAME runs fine rotated to fill a vertical.

      I still use Emulation Station as a front-end since this can be managed from the horizontal position on my system. However, I am using an LCD display upside-down (this is typically the best viewing angle for a table top cocktail design) and I need to rotate everything 180 degrees using config.txt. I don't believe my system pays much of a penalty for that, if any. But I did try running with 90 degree rotation at the system level and I can confirm that games definitely slow down.

      So, from personal experience, if you can keep the operating system horizontal and let the emulators do the rotation for vertical games, you get the best performance. And if Attract Mode has the ability to rotate itself, well, that's the best vertical solution I have heard of on the Pi so far.

      @simonster I have a NTSC set, With component it's the reason I'm using the YUV Transcoder all my other consoles is using Scart cables via a Scart Switch. Some how I eliminated the squeeze picture issue and ran into other problems with Retroarch not saving menu settings. And I can't get cores to run at all. I would down load them but they will not show up.

      @lostless yup. Thats why these games are better on a crt. Developers knew the quirks and capabilities and used them to cheat the system.
