      @azamoth
As @caver01 told you there are several ways... and your display just needs a few Pins as told....

If nothing else helps use MCP23008 or MCP23017 gpio expanders and connect to I2C-bus. But please don't ask me how to do this. Never used that :)

@theepicdarklord you wire switches to available GPIO pins and a ground pin. Then, you can run software that watches GPIO and converts the buttons/switches into keyboard commands or game controller input.

Adafruit's Retrogame is a popular choice, but GPIOnext is becoming the better choice, as it will be more user-friendly and has a lot more options for keyboard, gamepad, and can even trigger commands.

Im putting the gpio issue on hold for the moment as for some reason my adapter magically started working correctly. I plan to revisit it someday as it would reduce costs if I built one of these for someone else but for now its on hold. However my arduino came today and should make for some fun here soon.

Can somegive tell me which PINs to use from the original SNES Reset button, so I can solder 2 wires and connect one to GPIO17 and the other one to GND of the Raspberry?
I don't know which one is which one and am unsure if the picture is correct or not.

That guide is outdated (I think it was around RetroPie 2), the mk_arcade_joystick module can be installed from the Retropie setup drivers menu.

@darksavior Just wanted to say thanks for the help. I don't know how I got myself so confused about the 2 drivers?
I uninstalled snesdev and tried again. It helped a little but the controller still wasn't working properly. The thing is, I'd left the wires I'd soldered on quite long, to make moving things around easier, and the wire I'd used wasn't of the best quality. I re-soldered a ribbon cable that was half the length of the old cable I'd used, connected it up as per the gamecon diagram, with just the gamecon driver installed and now everything's working.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Sussed it! Updated everything using the command lines- reinstalled. then needed to add "SUDO" to the "modprobe --first-time gamecon_gpio_rpi map 4,4"

All working! Thanks for the help!

@edmaul69 I appreciate the clarification. Not finding any information on the subject was annoying, so being told it was impossible without any explanation as to if it is actually impossible or just unlikely was rather insulting. I admit I currently have very little familiarity with I2C and haven't done much Linux wizardly in a while, but it seems i just have to wire everything to the correct pin, figure out what each button press does and map that to a controller function. Not impossible.

I should note that this is actually a fake console - though everything except the motherboard is identical. The controller doesn't work on a Wii, but the second controller I bought does, and both controllers plus a Classic Controller pro all work with the NES Crassic. I don't expect this to make it any more difficult then if I had genuine controllers, but it may mean my driver may not handle all the extra checks a genuine controller wants.

Currently I'm waiting on a soldering gun and some female pin connectors to come in the mail before i start.

Hi @dondeivid2000 and welcome to the forums.

You need to complete the information requested in: https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first

I would also ask, you say RetroPie 3, RetroPie 4.2 was the last major image release.

Can you detail how your controller is connected to the Pi?

      Si

@theRog05 If you're re-starting again, then get the 4.5.1 image from https://retropie.org.uk/download, which should have the necessary pre-requisites installed.
