it's your device - did you purchase it with RetroPie ?

Not really, it's not my device. My sister gave it to me because they were not using it and after updating it the joysticks stopped working.
I will try to reinstall mk_arcade_joystick_rpi and if not, I will have to reinstall it from 0.

      Thanks!

Built From: an image from arcade punks.

We don't support 3rd party images - especially the ones loaded with ROMs. Use the image from retropie.org.uk/download and we can offer support.

Ok I finally found where this issue was coming from. And it has nothing to do with other controllers afterall.

See the plastic case around the right joystick is not completely flat. Such that the 'Up' direction does not go exactly as far as the other directions in fact.

The axis values setup with uinput were : 0 to 40.
The real ADC values read were :

      left-right axis : Between 4(left) and 37 (right) Up-Down axis : Between 6(up) and 38 (down)

So the up direction was 6 units from the minimum value, while the others were only 4 units or less from min/max values. And it seems that was the issue here. This 6 must have been considered inside the 'Dead-zone' of the joystick for the EmulationStation mapping configurator.

After modifying the python script such that the axis setup was between 0 and 36, and reducing the read values of ADC by 4, I now have :

The axis values setup with uinput were : 0 to 36.
The real ADC values read :

      left-right axis : Between 0(left) and 34 (right) Up-Down axis : Between 1(up) and 35 (down)

      And now it's registering correctly.

Though I think this issue is probably the same for the other topics/gamepads that I found on reddit/this forum. It's probably the joystick "dead-zone" which is too big in the emulationstation mapping configurator for those specific gamepads.

I just got this to work and it does help making GnG much more playable!

Use the Hotkey+X combo to open the green settings screen. Find 'Options'.

I had to flip both 4-way and also analog->digital to get it to play well. It's not perfect since only an actual correct joystick would do that. But it's now completely playable so can recommend for others that are having this problem.

just closing the loop here, for 1. i didn't figure out how to map the system's joystick fire button to a gamepad button but after some online searching apparently every TI994A game can be controlled solely by the keyboard - the fire key for Shamus is "q" after some trial and error (hold "q" and press the direction of fire). all good now!

@NewAtThis Can you try updating the ti99sim emulator from source and check again if the resolution handling is better ? It's been updated to the latest version, which was a major update.
Try to remove any video mode set through the runcommand launch menu.

Open the options on the Retroarch menu and there's an option whose label I forget that will "map directions to digital" instead of analog. It's set to analog by default. I had to do it a few days ago.

      See if it works.

@pjft said in Please help, arcade machine.:

If you're in the UK, the folks at https://www.arcadeworlduk.com/ were reliable, back then, and have everything you'll need.

I can second that for Germany, too, at least before the Brexit. But I guess it will only add the possibility of import taxes for Europe now. I got nearly everything for my DIY arcade cabinet from AWUK except for the cabinet itself, its screen, and the Pi.

You should also look here in the forum for threads about other people's cabinet builds. The next best thing to learning by doing is learning from other people's doing (and their mistakes). :)

edit: As for struggling, such a project can really help getting your mind off it. My cab did the same for me when I suffered over the temporary loss of a very close platonic friendship with my ex-girlfriend because her new partner couldn't bear it even after a couple of open talks with both of us. He's already history and we both have new partners by now, but that doesn't diminish the help I had from my project.

Try updating the lr-hatari emulator from source, I think 2 player support hasn't been added until recently.

I suggest you start with a fresh image and add your ROMs/BIOS files, leaving the configurations alone for this first step.

very well, that's what I'm going to do.

      I did it this way:

copy the default RA-controller-config to another place of your choice (i.e.: "/home/AMIBERRY Inputs/") edit the button-mapping as you like in this copied file start AMIBERRY-GUI go to "paths", navigate the "inputs"-path to your new one. click on the button "rescan paths" There you go, the inputs are now as you like to have them global for all games ;)
