... understand that the forum doesnt't support 3rd party images. Only please, have you a suggest that I can try, on one precompiled image, to try to found and correct the problem?

I think the meaning of the do not support 3rd party images is still unclear to you.

@RonsterMonster said in USB SNES controller not configured message when rom loads:

So the name match, but i think there is a catch.
usb gamepad.cfg is the file name
      running cat /proc/bus/input/devices gives:
      Name="usb gamepad "
Looks like a lot of empty spaces ???

If you look in the issue link I posted, you'll see it's the same situation. The .cfg name is without spaces, while the name of the joystick has a lot of spaces at the end. Just rename the file so it has the same name (usb gamepad .cfg, with the spaces at the end).

would I be better off if i want to use my laptop to run emulators manually and not use retropie? I prefer retropie as its all bundled up :)

Not sure what you mean here - you mean installing the emulators outside of RetroPie and running them ? You can do that, but I don't see how that can be easier for someone that's not familiar with each emulator in particular (i.e. know about RetroArch et. all).

Can you give more details about your system ? See https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first; you don't have to list all gamepads in the info, but what is important is what platform are you running on and how are the gamepads connected.

EmulationStation should save the controller info after the gamepad is configured, this is stored in $HOME/.emulationstation or (if you're using file shares to access your system) in \\retropie\configs\emulationstation. The filename is es_input.cfg and you can check its contents after each controller is configured to see if an entry for it is added.
It's better to add them one by one and - after adding one controller - restart EmulationStation and check that the controller works fine.

[..] when I run games it goes to the 4 arcade joysticks.

That's probably because they're added as Player 1 - 4 in the order of their detection and they're always detected first.

I have set retroarch to show 13 ports so I can finally see all the controllers

Not sure how useful this is unless you want to play a 13 player game - not a very common scenario.

. I also have the setup of the controllers get mixed up in emulation station and I have to go back into setup each one or restart the system.

That may happen if different controllers have the same name and Vendor/Product IDs. The name and VID/PID serve as an identifier to the configuration of the controller (not only in EmulationStation, but emulators also). That's not something that can be fixed easily or by configuration: if 2 different controllers identify themselves similarly, then how can the system tell them apart ?

@mitu I'm not sure how to describe it. I've tried 3 different versions of Ubuntu and Pop OS and they all do the same thing after installing RetroPie. It will crash once when starting for the first time then work fine. The 8bitdo buttons don't program correctly the first time but will all map the second time. Then after I run a rom it stops recognizing the 8bitdo or it won't even load the rom and just locks up the system. The bluetooth stops responding on the OS desktop as well. I'll try to look into the 8bitdo firmware and see if that is an issue. I'm at a loss at this point.

      @mitu said in Mapping USB-gamepad (SNES) to lr-vice (1.8.4.- VICE x64 (3.3 1274f7d)):

but at the beginning of the topic you also said:

fter that I can take over with USB-pad and play to some extend. Up, Down, Left, Right and Fire do work with USB but "start" & "select" simply won't.

Hence my misunderstanding. So only the VKBD is the one that doesn't pop-up.

Yes you are right, it started that way. But then, at one point after some re-installations as documented here, I noticed the combo of "start + select" suddenly working for getting out of games. It wasn't that way from the beginning.
Now it's only the VKBD-issue left.

Thanks for your very detailed steps. Although very old; for future googlers with an headless server this might be important:

I spent hours troubleshooting emulation which hangs at "1 gamepad detected", and couldnt get any further even when pressing buttons. Apparantly there is an bug where emulationstation will start properly, but hangs if there arent any window managers installed... Installing xfwm4 (on the host) fixed this problem

      Hi,

I've recently put together a Retropie kit with RPI 3 and SN30 Pro controllers. I realise that these are not your controller and I'm pretty sure that this information came from this site, but in order for the controllers to be recognised as js0 and js1 they needed to be started in macOS mode (START+A), when used with the USB cables on a RPI. I also updated the firmware on the controllers.

There is a command line tool (jstest) that can be used to test them. Again there is are youtube videos on this (checkout Floob's vids)

I got mine working as well, the trick, I think was to copy in the ini file (changing the name) and let the config file generate it's own information based on the ini file (device id etc). I did set the number to 0 (full manual) for the controller, but it doesn't seem to matter as it changes back automatically once you launch a mupen64* emulator.

The controller will only work in mupen64 emulators though, so I may still return the adapter for something better. N64 is SOOOO much better with a real N64 controller though.

Not sure why this failed for me the first time, I think by taking in the cfg file I corrupted something.

@Farmer-Ted I would be very interested in knowing if you found a solution to this. I am in the process of building my own and would like to use controllers that are USB like you are.

Any info you could provide would be great! Thanks for your help.

@rbaker thanks, but we've already ruled out the power issue (see my replies above on the progress). It detects in the command line thing, but won't detect in emulation station. Everything works fine in Windows, so i know nothing is broken. This is really for linux masters only.

      Thanks, that worked.

ES still said "No Gamepads Detected" but when I held down a button on the SNES pad it showed its name and let me configure it.

Any possible reasons why I wasn't detected before creating the 99-gamepad.rules file? Here is the HID descriptor I use for the gamepad:
