@foxcek please read my last post. Can you take a picture of the tv screen when you hit the info button or change the channel to the video mode you are using? I want to see what mode its on. Plus a pic of the back of your tv's video hookups with and without the cables plugged in.

@mitu Presumably Ruby's referring to the video links (which I decided to upload to either mixtape.moe or pomf.cat at the time).

Of course, since neither of those sites operate anymore, I decided to reupload it to something that's (hopefully) more reliable.

And just for the sake of prosperity, here's the video from the original post and the first update (complete with the never-before-seen original file names!).

@crumbs what resolution is your tv? When you select a game it pops up press a button to configure and either remove any video settings you have set or set it to the resolution of your tv and see if that helps.

@allanbuzzy Unfortunately, no; the sound effects were manually edited in post since ES doesn't support custom sounds when scrolling on systems. :(

I Agree, the SEGA logo at the very beginning is nice for an intro. A 6.7 second intro to be exact. A bit short but it could be extended to keep showing the logo for a few more seconds.

@Hex If that is so, then great that's exactly what I wanted to hear. Indeed, most of my videos work perfectly fine, only a mere fraction make a black screen. I guess this issue will be put on the back burner for now.

Finally about the video audio, I found it in the audio settings (I think it was there all along..!). But might be nitpicky, but I wish there was a way to enable video sounds in the ES menu, but remove it in the screensaver. Really though, at this point, the option that is already there satisfies my needs for the most part.

Thanks, Hex, you were very helpful. :)

Spent hours and learned the hard way that you can't add it to the retropie/gamelist.xml anymore in 2.7.5
But you can add it to any other system gamelist.xml that has roms
Really needs a default folder as an option but for now just add the tag to any of your system gamelists

I don't use videos in ES because of the extreme heat
But I link 5 videos without names/paths to be discovered by the random video screensaver by simply adding it to the bottom of the nes/gamelist.xml file

      <gameList> <game><video>/home/pi/RetroPie/splashscreens/ss1.mp4</video></game> <game><video>/home/pi/RetroPie/splashscreens/ss2.mp4</video></game> <game><video>/home/pi/RetroPie/splashscreens/ss3.mp4</video></game> <game><video>/home/pi/RetroPie/splashscreens/ss4.mp4</video></game> <game><video>/home/pi/RetroPie/splashscreens/ss5.mp4</video></game> .... </gameList>

Works perfect every time and oddly don't overheat the pi while playing.

@pjft I'm not holding my breath on that til stretch is released as it will be much easier to do once we don't have to compile ffmpeg, but i imagine we'll be able to come up with a workable solution by the time that comes around (probably come end of year ish)

This is a nice idea in concept. While it doesn't at the moment support it, it wouldn't be a stretch to implement.

That being said, VLC on the Pi is already quite sub-optimal, having it stream a video from YouTube, unless we can specify the quality of the stream to be one of the lower ones (and even so) might be a bit more resource intensive than ideal for the little Pi.

Might be worth testing out rendering a random videogame snap that would come from ArcadeItalia via VLC in the command line, and see how it'd perform, and then decide whether it's worth investing in it at the moment. That'd be my recommendation.

OMXPlayer also allows for that, but it requires a bit more tweaking.

Anyway, for non-Pi systems, and for users who'd be permanently online and have good bandwidth, that would be a welcome addition I imagine.

That being said, a bit of a cautionary tale: given that neither VLC nor OMXPlayer are using any sort of official API, things might break at a moment's notice if things change on the YouTube side of things. Been there, had that happen a few times with such things.

      Thanks!

      @ChoccyHobNob nice! I had no idea =)

@DJKatastrof, thank you for the details. Sounds like I should check into the background tiling. I'll play with that over the weekend.

Regarding image size - yup I was referring to boxart/screenshot images scraped for each game. Sometimes I have seen larger ones cause stuttering when moving between games in the list.

If you up for sending me the theme yes that would be awesome and helpful to compare. And vise versa if you want any help sorting through z-index items or other theme aspects don't hesitate to ask either.

      Thank you for your help

@TMNTturtlguy Thanks - same wishes to you, especially with no power at the moment.

Yeah, I can't wait for the first bug reports to start coming up... :P

I should actually start a page in the documentation for Video Players and the Random Game Screensaver as well. That should save quite a bit.

One more thing for my to do list.
