Hi @JoseyWales ! I just made a thread about this as well and came across yours as I was tagging mine.

I have the Kodi working well with my 8bitdo controller but I am a now looking for a solution for PDFs and CBZ comic books. My thinking is for manuals, guides, tie-in comics for games, even maps!

I have come across a few possibilities concerning Kodi add-ons but they are not likely to be great to use with a game controller on a TV screen so I am looking to see if anyone has done this already. I had requested long ago that we get a wiki-viewer for RetroPie and one was sorted out via lynx/curses/etc but PDFs/epubs/mobi/CBZs will not be renderable in curses/the terminal.

1 - Images in Kodi. Kodi lets you view pictures and you could order each page/sheet into their own folders and view them like that. I need to test the zooming from a controller on a TV screen
2 - Kodi addons for ebooks and PDF files. There are a number of these but I have to test them out as well.
3 - Video conversion - This is a radical idea, but instead of trying to get the PDF/epub/cbz/mobi/etc formats to work properly with zoom and a controller and such, we could instead try to do it by converting these files to VIDEOS! You could then play them in Kodi and have them setup in such a way that they they are zoomed in properly and so forth. They would obviously be pause-able and rather than try and get the RetroPie to conform to what we need, we convert the files to something that the RetroPie would be able to handle better. This is technically the most complicated way but I think it is possible for me to write a script for Mac OS X machines to convert them.

Cheers for the offer @lilbud. It's not so much a matter of ability, as it is of time.

I wake up, go to work, get home, make dinner, put the kid in the bath, put the kid to bed, spend time with the wife, go to bed, repeat. On weekends, replace 'work' with 'house work' (washing, mowing, dishes, cleaning etc). The only time I have to myself is from between 10pm - midnight, so I can either go to bed at a decent time, or do something for myself for a couple of hours. Usually I just read to unwind/relax.

    @Dewey68

I ended up setting my left thumb stick in the Retroarch control config menu as my directional input and now the mame2003 games play much better!

@suprjami said in No HDMI Sound:

Edit /boot/config.txt and set hdmi_drive=2 to force HDMI audio out

This always works. It's funny because I have two Sony HD TV's (both different models), on the newer model everything works fine but on the older model I always have to edit the config.txt file.

Looks like I can only assign channels when its connected to a PS3. I'm guessing I'll have to leave only one dongle in and then connect the second as and when I need a P2 pad.

i thought hdmi=group need to be changed to 2 for monitors.

It depends on the resolution you want to output.

hdmi_group=1 has "TV" resolutions and refresh rates, and also sends the audio out the HDMI

hdmi_group=2 has "monitor" resolutions and refresh rates, but does not send the audio out the HDMI

If using a resolution in group 2, or if using a HDMI-to-VGA adapter which usually detects as a "monitor" in group 2, then you can force HDMI audio out with hdmi_drive=2

Most TVs support common monitor resolutions as well (1024x768, 800x600, etc) and most monitors these days support at least the common TV resolutions (1080p, 720p, etc) so the only practical difference between "1080p 60Hz" and "1920x1080 60Hz" is what happens with the audio.

There's a full list of all supported resolutions and refresh rates a little way down on this page: http://elinux.org/RPiconfig#Video

@newzilla7 I have an ipega PG-9023 and solved this same problem doing what I said here:
    https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/2719/keyboard-stopped-working-after-i-played-around-in-the-controller-config-in-rtgui/2

Some other guys (like this one) solved changing the retroarch.cfg input_driver to sdl2 (rather than udev).
