@mrralphman You can use the ImageMagick suite of programs to do that with a simple command line - see http://www.imagemagick.org/Usage/annotating/.

So EasyHax pointed out to me that any gamelist.xml file in the roms directory will override the one in the .emulationstation/gamelists/ directories. Sure enough I found a 0 byte gamelist.xml file in the snes roms directory. It HAD to be something this simple...

Yes, I think providing the beta on the official site (the only source of retropie images for new users) could be a good idea, of course with a statement like
If you're using a Pi 3B+, a Stretch based image is necessary. Here is a compatible beta/RC image of retropie, use it at your own risks, and please report eventual bugs on the forum. Final image coming soon
It would (I think) avoid a lot of disappointment for new users with 3B+, as well as a big load of new similar topics here :)
It could also involve more people in beta testing, and thus help to stabilize the image.
Again, it's just my personal point of view.
I use Stretch image for 2 months now without major issue, and I assure you I've seen a huge lot of far less polished commercial (and furthermore expensive) products hitting GA :)

why aren't old images on github?

When Cortés reached the new world, he burned his ships to inspire confidence in his men to move forward. With RetroPie however, I imagine it's simply a matter of practicality. Supporting the latest greatest release already takes a village. Supporting all the outdated images that have come and gone would be a pretty big burden. Personally, I don't see that 4.x is any less "plug and play" than 3.6. What are some examples that you've noticed?

@zerojay I've been using compression for years now admittedly on arch though which means I may have
had a newer version of btrfs then is in debian currently this whole time.

Quite a few power outages during that time its been as a whole 100x more stable then my experience with XFS ever was and that gets recommended for extremely large data deployments (don't know why XFS eats data on any system I've used it on).

My raspberry has the same disk size as my main desktop SSD, 128GB is a little cramped by modern standards but I don't think I'll be riding 90% the whole life of my Pi.

Might be harder on microsd's but frankly isn't ext4 itself known to be extremely rough on microsd storage as well?
Its complained about when it comes to android phones but they just don't expect the phone to be around long enough for it to be a problem.

Fragmentation might be a valid argument but I've never noticed a issue with it, still seems as snappy as when I first put the filesystem on my system.

Just did a fragmentation scan on my drive besides a couple files with 19 and 54 extents 99% of them are sitting at 1 extent.

@cpt-bananas Re-install Emulationstation from the RP setup script and see if that fixes it.

@benjaminjay I thought you were asking, and I quote:

What is the best way to fix these ROMs using a Windows PC?

But you fail to mention what kind of ROMs, so I assumed arcade, and the answer is that you need to obtain the right ROM version for the right emulator. They are not interchangeable.

Your second question is quite a bit different than that. I suspect Windows is only going to be able to read the boot partition of an SD card setup with the official image. You will need to load a certain kind of driver to let you read/mount linux drive partitions, or use Linux to read them.

<EDIT> @mitu above has a better suggestion that might work for you. Load the image on the system that is going to run it, then connect to the ROM folders over a network with your windows sysetem to add/remove/replace ROMs.

@matchaman An image is exactly that. A snapshot of the complete file structre including all data AND blank space. As was said, you would need to use a disk management tool to shrink the image and remove some empty space in order to fit onto a smaller card. Again, I've never done this myself.

Yes..you can expand the filesystem in Raspi Config in the Retropie menu. Then the additional space will be seen and used.

@herb_fargus said in Make backup image:

@inunotaishou sharing ROMs is against the forum rules. And even if your image didn't have ROMs it's incredibly reckless to share an image with all your configs which likely include your credentials for wifi access among other things.

Follow the available guides. Having other people do things for you does nobody any good.

So..... Where are the working guides you talk about?

      Tried this one, and failed
      Tried this one first, failed
I really wanted this one to work, but it kept breaking at the end

It's a good thing there are no ROMs on that image. My wifi credentials might be on there. The only thing I did to that image was run my publically available PiStation 2 setup script and configure the PS2 controllers before I made the image. I think I use that password on some throw away email accounts and pokemon games that I don't even know the account names to.

@derikpelser we do not support third party images and if you use third party images most are illegal, but you're also opening yourself up to likely malware.

Please use the official image we provide.
