Upgrading the OS is not supported by Raspbian nor RetroPie. You probably have found some instructions on how to upgrade using apt and updating its configuration files in /etc/apt, but it's not a recommended process, especially for a beginner.

If you wish to use an up-to-date/current version, use the image from http://retropie.org.uk/download. We don't support 3rd party image, as outlined in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first.

@dankcushions ah wow I didn't know that. Still though, not sure I can get much overclock put of pi zero anyway, a few online mention 1080 or so, but I doubt that'll give a significant boost to be worth it.

How are you connecting the devices - do you have an USB hub (and which type) ? Can you check the system log with dmesg to see if any errors appear there when the controller becomes unresponsive ? What power source (and no, a phone charger is not a proper power source) are you using ?

I'm not sure if you are the best person to ask this question to, but since you started this thread I'm going to give it a try.

I have been using the Cyclone: enable option and setting frameskip: 1 on FB Neo on Retropie (PiZero), and I surely see a substantial improvement in performance.
As I wrote in my previous message from last year, when I try to load/save a game, emulationstation crashes and it goes back to the game list.

Yesterday I saw that there is a new version of Retropie (Version 4.5.1) available, and in the change-log it's mentioned that it now supports Cyclone for improved performance.
I tried it from a fresh install, but sadly I get the same issues.

Do you have any suggestions that could help me in debugging and hopefully fixing the issue?

@arrowhead The driver is available to be installed from the RetroPie setup menu - in the Manage Packages / Manage driver packages section, so you don't need to install it manually. In fact, this is explained in the page I quoted, in the Installation section.

The Pi 1/0 utilize armv6 processors and the 2/3 use armv7. The images are optimized to accommodate the difference.

You might would consider upgrading to a bigger sized micro sd card. 8 gb is usually the minimum as the OS will require a good part of the available free size of the micro sd card to be be installed.

I would say an 8 gb or even better a 16 gb micro sd card should be sufficient.

@jay81uk The problem with the Pi0 image not working with the Pi0W was fixed within a day or two of the Pi0ws release as far as I can remember.

@edmaul69 Yes i have a mouse, gamepad and keyboard attached. It was running on HDMI just to take this picture. The mouse is above ESC button.

@Floob I'm now running retropie 4.2 on pi zero
when trying to get my neo geo games to work i used to use pifba on 4.1 and it would work perfectly with my wired ps3 only one player now that I'm using 4.2 pifba games run perfect but my ps3 controller doesn't work right up=start down=select if figure that much not when i change emulator to lr-fbalpha controller works perfect but the games start to lag and not working perfectly i haven't tried bluetooth yet but i figure it will be the same PLEASE HELP BEEN STUCK FOR A WHILE
