@dankcushions These "mini" themes work perfect! I never thought of using 4:3 themes or were aware of them; it fixes the distortion problem and now everything's proportional, thank you :)

Strange thing is that I never un-commented either of those lines. I know that there is some strange resolution changes that happen when entering and exiting games in MAME and FBL, so I'm thinking that the commenting/un-commenting of those lines must happen while using those emulators and I just happened to freeze the Pi after the un-comment, so it wasn't going to be fixed until I figured out what needed to be done manually.

I'll give that a try. I seem to recall there used to be a 4:3 version of the "comic book" theme, so that might also be an option.

You probably were able to figure this one out since it has been quite some time, though just wanted to reply for anyone stumbling to this; the mixed up colors seem to be an artifact of the SPI bus bandwidth limitations of the ILI9486 controller chip on the display. If the display is driven too fast that the controller simply cannot handle it, the colors on the whole display can get distorted. There is no way around it.

My ILI9486 has maximum speed of 31.88MHz (31880000), and beyond that the colors get messed up. I posted a comment on the thread you linked to with more information about the observed limits of ILI9486 with a video. With fbcp-ili9341 project I was able to squeeze out some more performance from the ILI9486 compared to the dtoverlay method, but beyond simple retro games, it looks like ILI9486 is definitely not a display controller for fast paced games.

@gpmcty You probably figured this out a long time ago but the config file is in the /opt/retropie/configs/atari800/ folder.

The screen I used is a 128*128 screen so yours may be different. There is also the guide in my signature for ili9341 screens, you will see the similarities between the instructions, and get some idea of the wiring

@wawa My issue was over with that. changing that from the editor was enough to make it work.
Make sure you type all the correct characters and texts leaving no room for Retropie to rewrite that info

Okay I've almost finished my long dead project but I'm having trouble wiring in the GBA's controller board into the Pi in a way that it recognizes it as a configurable controller. Can I do this or am I trying to do something that's simply not possible?

@Yamt that appears to be a waveshare clone and should follow the waveshare 32b guide.

The scaling artifacts arguments makes a whole lotta sense, thanks for the quick reply! I'll just go for a 1024x768 then if it doesn't really affect GPU performance much.

Once I️ read your post I️ tried hooking up the pi to my tv. Shutdown, reboot. Shutdown reboot. No issues. Thank you posting this, I’ll bet this is why a lot of people are having the same issue!
