@camjrp Those errors seem related to your Xorg installation or desktop environment.

@psyke83 said in Error and GUI terminates back to ES when launching RetroPie-Setup direct on machine (libudev?) - but SSH is ok:

      @BuZz

It looks like we might need to add a delay to the runcommand invocation as well?

I implemented python-evdev support into the script: https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/compare/master...psyke83:joy2key_evdev

Tested it on Ubuntu 18.10, confirmed it to work well and eliminate the need for any delays... and then realized afterwards that Raspbian doesn't have this package :/

It's possible to get on Raspbian via installing python-pip and then installing it that way, but python-pip requires 30MB or so of extra packages. A damn shame :(

how about the idea of re-implementing joy2key in C and use libevdev/libudev directly? the binary would be much smaller and elegant than having the python interpreter :)
joy2key doesn't seem to be too complex functionally speaking. In few weeks I will have much more time available and could help with this if interested.

@Halvhjearne said in retropie on ubuntu 18.10 is adding unnecessary/broken apt sources:

there is a package available upstream for both cosmic and bionic, would it be possible to maybe fix the script to not add the broken repo for cosmic?

The repo is mainained by the FS-UAE author and it's the recommended way to install it (https://fs-uae.net/download#ubuntu). If anything changes regarding that, we can also update the script. While for 18.x the latest package is upstreamed (Ubuntu), for older releases the PPA has the latest version. Let's see what happens when 19.04 breaks loose.

So glad i hit upon this thread.
I had a similiar use case as that of OP's. Didn't find Rp3 performant enough, so i have odroid c2 running librelec. But now i want to run retroarch with kodi on another microSd on C2. I did similiar permuations with the images but just like as OP's they all failed.
If anyone got it working on c2, it would be greatly appreciated if they can contribute in updating the wiki or let know even if they were able to do so, so that investing time might be worthwhile. The "retropie-4-x-on-odroid-c2" link is helpfull but can't fully grasp if some steps are obsolete or still required.

@Phil333 did you pursue this further or dropped it for now?

      thanks for this thread tough!

If interested, I can also raise another PR at some point regarding my post above, where I have custom launching scripts for A500, A600, A1200, and CD32 and a modified emulators.cfg to suit. Maybe you can take a look at it and see if you are happy to add it in. I know it's x86 only and probably not a priority but I think it improves on the defaults for those who use it.

@niculinux said in Base Retropie on Ubuntu instead of Raspbian?:

Essenctially because upsting/upgrading versions in Ubuntu is more simple than Debian.

No, it's not. Does Ubuntu provide a version for Raspberry PI which is easier and better supported than Raspbian ? RetroPie already supports Ubuntu - on the PC.

So what happened was, I didn't think I wanted ALL of RPie when I started. So I cloned a Emulationstation repos...

with retropie-setup you can install as little or as much of retropie as you like.

Retropie 4.4.1+ on Mint 19, Ubuntu 16.04 & 18.04, Debian 8 & 9 - Black Screen when Starting Roms (GL->SDL2 Fixes). I think its an issue with Retropie, not Linux.

@phoenixjedi For a PC, with enough CPU, it won't affect the performance. You're free to use both options and see the difference, if any. Note that RetroArch defaults to not activate this option by default on Pc builld.

so how do i edit sources.list?

from a terminal, type sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list

but i think it's also important to familiarize yourself with some basic unix/linux concepts, since this is turning into more of an Ubuntu support thread.
