I found and fixed the problem. I hadn't paid attention to the fact that I hadn't put up and down and left and right on the same axis ( +1/-1 +0/-0 ). By simply swapping two of the switch cables on the sticks and remapping the inputs in retroarch I now have 4 directions + 4 proper diagonals on both sticks ( easily tested in 1943 for example )

Its a new sd card that works fine on my phone and pc. The image is written with win32diskimager should I maybe use different writing software?

I found the solution in: Audio issue with latest version of RetroPie.

For those who want to know, the solution was to add this to the config.txt file in /boot:

dtparam=audio=on

I don't know about the overall issue, but I think the keyboard one is that the terminal isn't echoing what you type on keyboard. Try to (blindly) enter the reset command to reset the terminal and maybe you'll get the keyboard working fine.

@AlexMurphy Ok. I think I figured out why. I tried transferring through the network and I'm getting an "exceeding a user disk quota" message. So I'm guessing my card is full, but I know there's no way I can be close to being maxed out. It will not let me expand the memory through retro pie due to running noobs. Is there another way to expand the size without having to reformat and lose everything?

@BuZz : You are right, the the sd card seems to be corrupted. I tried to format it and I got error meassages. So topic is done, thanks for your help :-)

@geneworld that is only for the nunchuck. Even if it were to work on the nes classic controller only two of the four buttons would work. But im pretty sure none of them will work

Pi 3 does have bluetooth. I was just saying I thought it worked on my Pi Zero which doesn't have bluetooth (thus needing a dongle). I found my dongle, but can't find that tiny Zero to test unfortunately.

@Droid you should go to intellivision.us and get jzintv with the gui. No command line with the added gui. Far better compatibility. I only use nostalgia when i am comparing crc's for rom versions.

no m8...you were dead right.
I've switched to nachos ready made 128gb image and it uses different emulators for different games....
my 2 faves wonderboy and pac land use ir-mame2003 and the video has no tearing at all.
just need to swap the button setup and I'm all set....have tried every key on the keyboard and it doesnt seem to have a button to bring the menu up for swapping buttons around like advmame.
