The problem it's not the hotkey, a lot of NES games use the select button for doing things in game.
I'm a medium-skilled developer, with some guidance on the retropie bluetooth scripts and stack I could write myself a script which does in background the pairing procedure again, at least with one model, the SN30.
If someone is willing to help or pointing me to who ask questions to, i'll be happy to try to write then publish such script.

@77claws Have you tried configuring the sound output from the Audio menu in RetroPie ? Choose the Headphones jack as the default sound output and it should route all audio over the 3.5mm jack.

Instead of changing these settings in raspi-config. Have you tried adding these settings in config.txt instead?

Video options in config.txt

For example
hdmi_ignore_edid=0xa5000080
hdmi_ignore_cec=1
hdmi_group=1
hdmi_mode=4

How about no type ? You can create a file with no extension or you can add a .txt extension to the file (ssh.txt).

It's not end-user friendly but it's possible..

You would have to compile it for pi (if available), add it to the emulators folder and edit it into the config files and es_system.cfg

That's how I have Mame4Rage2 and Supermodel running on my x86 build.

This is what I'm saying is your problem. You need to start over and find a matched set for the emulator you wish to use not the other way around. Google search for a "mame2003 0.78 romset" and use it exclusively with mame2003. The link I posted earlier walks you through all of this.

My controller has controls for 2 players, plus extra buttons in a separate location labeled A, B, A2, B2. There's also a section with 10 other buttons, with some labeled Select (generally the hot key, too), Coin One, Coin Two, Player 1, Player 2, Menu, Pause, and Exit.

What I was thinking was that it would be nice to use the extra four A, B, A2, B2 buttons for the controls in EmulationStation. Menu could replace Select-Player1 and pull up that menu, and Exit, of course, would drop into the command line (or maybe reboot).

From what you're saying, it sounds like I can do this by manually editing es_input.cfg - as long as someone doesn't come along and clobber that config with a new one. (But, of course, I'd keep a backup - and when I have people over, I put it in Kiosk or Kid Mode.) Then I can also edit retroarch.cfg separately for the emulators (other than ones like AdvMame, that use their own configuration file).

Am I right about this? (I want to make sure I'm clear and understand what you're saying.)

I got some controls working with AdvMame. I need to go through and get a few pages on the AdvMame configuration settings, since I wasn't sure what to use to specify controls for the trackball or spinner. I also had a problem because my "Coin One" button pauses the game no matter what. This leads to funky issues. For instance, on one game, I kept trying to put in a coin by pressing that button and it just paused the game. On another game, it would add a coin to the count, but also pause the game until I pressed it again.

I also found that AdvMame can read a keyboard as if it's two controllers. Since I can change my controller from "B Input Mode" to "Keyboard Mode" (I'm guessing "B" means "Button," but I don't know.) From what I can see, just reading the TAB menu on AdvMame, I might have success using Keyboard mode and letting the keyboard act like two controllers.

That also raises another question I'm going to have to spend time searching for: Mame-Libretro(2003) vs. AdvMame. Do I keep both on the system? I'm not sure if they'll both work consistently with the controller in one mode. AdvMame seems to work better, including using sound sample files easily, and the ROM set that works with AdvMame has more games in it. But that's a whole other issue to explore. Ideally I'd like to get my controller working in Keyboard and B Mode in both AdvMame and Mame-Libretro, but if I can get it to do everything in one form, I'll call it a day.
